MOJO PRESENTS Blues Breakers! (2013)

Screen Shot 2013-03-24 at 4.51.36 PMMOJO PRESENTS – Blues Breakers! 15 Classic Tracks As Covered By Eric Clapton (May 2013)

The latest free CD from the May, 2013 MOJO Magazine is a “roots” collection of mostly early blues sides, made familiar to many a young 60s teen via Eric Clapton and his various bands. It’s yet another MOJO‘s blues collection, but – because of the music – they’re always worthy, even if you have these tracks already… which you should.(Besides… the Clapton tie-in works nicely.) frontMOJO Presents: Action!
15 Cult Move Classics
(2013)

The latest free CD from the April, 2013 MOJO Magazine is a collection of cult film soundtrack music. The tracks aren’t quite as “classic” as the cool cover might suggest, but this is still a good gathering (especially considering the price tag) that dabbles in a little Morricone, Bobby Womack (coincidently I just prepped Across 110th St. for posting) and Curtis Mayfield, alongside some oddities like The Last Poets, David Lynch and Rodriguez. If nothing else, you’ll have a file of Ricky Nelson’s “Lonesome Town” in your collection. You can find 131 more MOJO‘s in the archives (HERE).

MOJO PRESENTS… Echoes – A Compendium Of Modern Psychedelia (2013)

Screen Shot 2013-01-26 at 3.47.12 PMMOJO Presents… Echoes (March 2013)

The latest free CD from the March, 2013 MOJO Magazine is a “modern compendium of psychedelia” to complement the mag’s latest cover story on Pink Floyd. I haven’t heard of many of these bands, but I’m a fool for psychedelia, so it doesn’t take much to please me in this genre, especially since it’s not a difficult assignment, even for newcomers and nobodies. There are, as expected, a few duds, but I liked it. Your mileage may vary. Hear a few tracks below. 130 more MOJO‘s in the archives (HERE).

MOJO PRESENTS: Marr And Friends (2013)

frontMarr And Friends (February 2013)

The latest free CD from the February, 2013 MOJO Magazine is a gathering of The Smiths’ Johnny Marr’s pals. Both of Marr’s contributions – “The Right Thing Right” (from his upcoming solo album) and “The Last Ride” – are outstanding, and will make you wonder why he spent so much time hanging around with Bor… uh, Morrissey (sorry, my bias is showing). Overall the disc is a good listen, if Brit-centric, illustrated best by Billy Bragg’s spoken word monologue over an acoustic rendering of The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee.” 129 more MOJO‘s in the archives (HERE).

MOJO PRESENTS: Rumours Revisited (2012)

Rumours Revisited (January 2013)

The latest free CD from the January, 2013 MOJO Magazine is a tribute to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. I haven’t gotten it in the mail yet, but it’s already all over the web, so I’ll have to post additional artwork later. Most of these songs are hard to mess up. The disc is worth having for “In Dreams,” as the interplay and vocal psychedelia really brings out the beauty of the composition. The same vibe applies to The Besnard Lakes take on “You Make Loving Fun.” 128 more MOJO‘s in the archives.

A Psych Box To Get Psyched About

Another great box from the archives. 4CDs, compiled by the fine folks at MOJO Magazine, chronicling the UK psychedelic experience. Compilations always create quibbles, but this is a great listen regardless of what’s been omitted or curiously added. The names below will tell you all you need to know, but your ears are the ultimate decider… and they should be pleased. Check out the great 1968 psych tune from McGough & McGear (a.k.a. Mike McCartney), “So Much.” Includes booklet art. Out of print, and it’s not cheap at Amazon.

Let’s Move – A Heavy Blues Collection (December 2012)

The latest free CD from the December, 2012 MOJO Magazine is yet another in an unending series of blues/roots collections compiled by the UK mag. This one is loosely arranged to pay tribute to Led Zeppelin’s 2012 live album, Celebration Day. Fortunately, this compilation boasts some new and different names, so it’s a worthy addition to your collection. 127 more MOJO‘s in the archives.

Move On Up – A Modernist Compendium (November 2012)

The latest free CD from the November, 2012 MOJO Magazine captures the fusion of influences that led to the modern Mod movement and its many offshoots. Includes a rare demo from The Jam, as well as a live version of “The Great Depression” (culled from the Deluxe Edition of The Gift). Not to mention the oft forgotten Bruce Foxton. My scanner’s down, so I’ll post more artwork later. We’ve got the other 126 MOJO‘s in the archives, too.

MOJO PRESENTS…There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – Indie Classics 1982-1987 (2012)

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (October 2012)

The latest free CD from the October, 2012 MOJO Magazine is a collection of “Indie Classics” from 1982-1987. Can’t say much of this interested me personally. I spot-checked it, looking for a catchy tune to post (before listening to the whole thing), but only found one I wanted to hear past the opening licks (below), and didn’t even bother with the other tracks. Your mileage may vary. We’ve re-upped the other 125 MOJO‘s in the archives, so collect them all.

MOJO PRESENTS Electricity (Sept. 2012)

Electricity (September 2012)

The latest free CD from the September, 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine is a tribute to electronica, entitled Electricity – A Brief History Of Future Sound. I like a few of these bands myself (CAN, Throbbing Gristle) but don’t really listen to this type of music much. It’s why the player hosts what might be the least representative track. Fans of the genre will know if this collection is worthy or not. We’ve just re-upped all the other 124 MOJO‘s in the archives, so collect them all.

MOJO PRESENTS: The Roots Of The Rolling Stones (2012)

The Roots Of The Rolling Stones (Aug 2012)

Not a very creative freebie from the latest edition of MOJO, as there are dozens of these kinds of tributes to the Rolling Stones from various sources… but, you can’t fault the music. It’s some of the best on earth. I’ve got it on now and am loving every second of it.

MOJO PRESENTS Yellow Submarine Revisited (July 2012)

Yellow Submarine Resurfaces (July 2012)

The latest free CD issue from the July, 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine is a tribute to the re-release of the Yellow Submarine DVD and song soundtrack. There are some interesting covers here, especially some of George Harrison’s lost wonders, “It’s All Too Much,” “Only A Northern Song” and “Love You To.” I like Jim White’s “All Together Now,” but only because I already liked his bizarre style. The Cornshed Sisters, who recorded a vocally robust Beach Boys bonus cover for last month’s MOJO, tackle “Nowhere Man” here. Check out the twisted cover of George‘s psych rock epic, “It’s All Too Much,” below.

The latest free CD issue from the May, 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine is a “roots of” The Small Faces collection, tied into the magazine’s current cover story on Small Faces/Humble Pie mainstay Steve Marriott (who passed away in 1991). Features lots of early blues, with a little skiffle and a few odds and ends (details below). Download includes (spotty) artwork. Don’t forget the 120 other MOJO‘s in the archives.

MOJO Presents: Come On Let’s Go! A Modern Day Jukebox (Compiled By Paul Weller 2012)

Come On Let’s Go! A Modern Day Jukebox – Compiled By Paul Weller (April 2012)

The latest free CD issue from the April, 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine. Apparently, the concept for this disc is simply what The Jam’s Paul Weller is listening to these days. Which didn’t interest me in the slightest… until I heard it. Most of these bands I only know of, having barely heard any of them. But, this is a smart gathering, made up largely of acoustics and harmonies. Very pleasing set. Baxter Dury is the son of Ian, while the Amy Winehouse track comes from a 2007 iTunes live performance. Don’t forget the 119 other MOJO‘s in the archives. Many links are down, but if you need a re-up on any of them, just leave a comment on the post itself and we’ll get right to it.

MOJO Presents: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen (2012)

The Songs Of Leonard Cohen Covered (March 2012)

The March 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine carries with it this CD compilation based on Leonard Cohen’s debut LP, The Songs Of Leonard Cohen. I really can’t address the material, as I’ve never been a Cohen follower, so non-fans are on their own. Beck and some of his pals covered this same album a couple of years ago. There are some bonus tracks not associated with the original LP. The spaced “Last Year’s Man” was a standout for me, but it didn’t sound anything like Leonard Cohen (I think). Don’t forget the 118 other MOJO‘s in the archives.

MOJO PRESENTS Sticky Soul Fingers – A Rolling Stones Tribute (2011)

Sticky Soul Fingers –
A Rolling Stones Tribute (2011)

The latest free CD release from MOJO Magazine’s January 2012 issue is a tribute to The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, with a soul twist. I know virtually none of these artists, but all the tracks are (apparently) previously unreleased, so it’s a bit more than just a gathering of tired covers (click the bottom image for a pop-up). As you already know, these types of affairs are hit and miss, but the soul angle gives this album a boost, and if you’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about Sharon Jones (& The Dap-Kings), you can check out her chops on a rearranged “Wild Horses.” I was personally drawn to the raw, 60s-technology sound of The Sugarman 3′s instrumental cover of “Bitch” (hear both tracks below). But… how Anthony Joseph managed to turn “Dead Flowers” into a 60s black funk manifesto is anybody’s guess. The cover, of course, is a variation of one of the alternate designs for Sticky Fingers, released, then withdrawn, overseas. Don’t forget the 116 other MOJO‘s in the archives.

Sticky Fingers (1971)
A Stellar Mix Of One Of The Best Ever

Throw a rock and you’ll hit somebody that considers Sticky Fingers the greatest album ever made during the rock era. And, it is kind of hard to believe that all those incredible songs (and performances) are from just one album. I grabbed this 2010 SHM 320 in anticipation of wanting to hear it after the MOJO tribute. What a sheer joy to listen to. Above and beyond it being one of the all time greats, this mix is just gorgeous (with distinct acoustic guitars in “Brown Sugar“). I want to buy one just because I know I’d never need another. Only thing at Amazon is the 2010 SAC (which may or may not be equivalent – or may be the same disc). The import cover you see is part of the latest ’10s packaging. Just follow the tribute brick road for the music.

A Primer For The 5CD Box Set

The latest free CD from MOJO Magazine is, more or less, a ‘roots of The Who’ collection, tying in with the mag’s cover story… and, of course, a new 5CD Quadrophenia reissue, featuring two full CDs of Pete Townshend’s glorious demos. Two of which are included on this disc, alongside the music that influenced him. More proof that greatness is attainable in just under 2-1/2 minutes. Grab ALL 116 MOJO‘s in the archives.

MOJO Presents: Harrison Covered (November 2011)

Harrison Covered (November 2011)
Everything’s Coming Up George

Credit Martin Scorsese with the recent rash of interest in George Harrison. The famed film director’s biography of George (airing on HBO in October) has sparked numerous magazine covers, along with this gathering from MOJO to celebrate GH’s song catalog. Cool, in that the track selection includes material from his Beatles and solo years… and even a song title I didn’t initially recognize, “Your Love Is Forever” from 1979′s George Harrison (the uplifting year that Harrison remarried and had his only child). As usual with most MOJO tribute comps there are a lot of new names alongside the vets (Richie Havens, Graham Nash, Ron Sexsmith and the great Iain Matthews, who delivers a just-like-George version of the under-appreciated “So Sad”). I was totally charmed by The Webb Sisters’ outstanding version of “I Need You” (listen below) but was totally bummed more wasn’t done with Harrison’s underrated wonder, “Long Long Long.” Too many artists here also took Harrison’s reverbed union with Phil Spector a little too much to heart. But, that’s the way it goes in the hit-and-miss world of various artist tribute comps. Find all 115 MOJO‘s in the archives.

MOJO Presents… Return To The Dark Side Of The Moon (October, 2011)

Return To The Dark Side Of The Moon (2011)
Not Bad For The “Money.”

Not to be confused with a 2006 retail release of the same name, MOJO Magazine’s October, 2011 free CD is an exclusive gathering of not-so-well-known artists commissioned to re-imagine an etched-in-stone classic, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon. Since PF are pooping out a three figure 2011 box themselves, MOJO took their own project a step further by creating a vinyl version of this Dark Side to be sold in stores, which is smart. Why just give it away when you can go Limited Edition (10,000 vinyl) and make something back? All in all, this Dark Side tribute is not bad… at all. “On The Run” is enhanced with live drum madness, Wolf People’s “Time” sounds faithfully juice with amphetamines (instead of herb), while The Last Hurrah!!’s “The Great Gig In The Sky” sports a pretty inventive arrangement. The Moon versions are generally based on the originals, but spiked with a much-needed youthful exuberance (check out the powerful take on “Money,” below). Unlike many of these kinds of tributes, I didn’t feel like I was suffering through it, until… the generally awful Wish You Were Here covers. In reality, this disc is a tribute to two Floyd albums, as all the tunes from Wish You Were Here are also covered. I didn’t make it all the way. A few “names” surface; Garth Hudson, The Orb, Doug Paisley, but for the rest of these artists, you’re on your own. Click HERE for a pop-up page to every one of MOJO‘s free CDs (now 114 & counting). UPDATE: A “Corrected & Completed” version of John Foxx And The Maths’ “Have A Cigar” was added to MOJO’s web site for free download. It’s also been included in with our full download, and individually (thanks to harryrag).

MOJO Presents… All 134 MOJO CDs (1997-2013)

TAH-DAAAH!

Welcome to the end of our MOJO Magazine CD archive. Over the last few years we’ve been slowly pulling together all of the free discs MOJO gives away to subscribers each month, and we think we finally have them all. 134 discs in all (and counting, by our count anyway) and all you gotta do is click the grey “MOJO Presents” box at the top of the post (or click HERE) to access them all. Individual links for each post are in the lower right corner of the blog. Many links are down, so just leave a comment on the post for a re-up.

Hopefully, any readers/completists out there will clue us in to anything we may have missed. Right now, we’re not including CDs from MOJO‘s offshoots, like MOJO Classic or their short-lived Collection’s magazine – which once gave away a Lee “Scratch” Perry 7″ single. Maybe later. Big thanks to everybody who has taken the time to send us parts of their collection to help complete this gathering. We couldn’t have done it without all your help. As you’ll see, MOJO started slow in 1997 with a series of label-sponsored collections entitled The MOJO Machine Turns You On. Then, over the next four years, from 2000-2004, they released only the occasional compilation – with thematic threads, however, that helped to distinguish the magazine’s offerings from the typical label-dictated freebies of other mags. But, MOJO didn’t settle in to an every month routine until July, 2004′s Chili Peppers Jukebox. Since then, they haven’t looked back. FYI: Twice, MOJO issued two CDs – September, 2004′s Beatlemania, Volumes 1 & 2 and January, 2006′s Born In The USA, Volumes 1 & 2. My guess is that readers pitched a bitch over having to buy two issues of the magazine to get both CDs, as MOJO hasn’t doubled-up since. A few of the gaps on our list did feature freebies other than music; postcards, posters, prints, even a small bag of buttons once. As for anything before 1997, we’re clueless, but we don’t think any CDs were given away during those years (MOJO debuted in November, 1993). So… take a look and see if you have something we don’t. If we did miss something, let us know and we’ll do another TAA-DAAAH! post.

MOJO Presents… THE FINAL FOUR: Feed Your Head (2002), In Search Of Syd (2007), 2003 (2003) & Born In The USA Volume 2 (2006)

Here are the final four discs to complete (we think) our 113 disc (and counting) collection of MOJOs. Feed Your Head is one of MOJO‘s best. Not only for the artfully mixed 16 tracks of eclectic folk/rock/jazz psychedelia – ranging from Funkadelic to The Sonics to Country Joe & The Fish – but for the inspired packaging, a disc designed as a pill in a see through plastic cover. To carry the psych theme a bit further, In Search Of Syd is a broad collection of Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd influences that’s all over the place, from the raw blues of Pink Anderson and Floyd Council to The Mothers Of Invention to the real outsiders, like Acid Mothers Temple & Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. 2003 is a bit of a throwback to the label sponsored releases that MOJO started out doing in the 90s, but this one’s a little more in line with the mag’s principles – including some new stuff from old artists, alongside the fresh ’03 meat. Thanks to Alex for taking the time and trouble to get this obscure one to us. Born In The USA, Volume 2 I’ve barely had a chance to preview. But, it’s a satisfying selection of more recent (2006) material, ranging from the always cool Iron & Wine to Bright Eyes to (personal fave) Brendan Benson. It’s got a quiet vibe, and though the material was new to me it was quite enjoyable. Big, big thanks to a few folks who offered help in getting this last, elusive MOJO here. Our pal Steve finally came through with some fresh 320s, for which we are eternally grateful. Click the covers for Amazon links. We’ll post future MOJO‘s (maybe on Sundays) as we get them. There are 109 more MOJOs waiting for you in the archives. Thanks to all.

MOJO Presents x 10 – The MOJO Machines Turns You On, Volumes 1-10 (1997-1999)

MOJO‘s first moves into the free CD giveaway market were these 10 quarterly (sorta) offerings, basically your standard compilations of recent major label releases – a time-honored way for magazines to get free music out of record companies. But, after these first 10, all called The MOJO Machine Turns You On (the first five being numbered), the magazine changed course and took a more editorially based approach to their free discs, developing ongoing themes and tailoring their comps to editorial content – instead of just what the labels were pushing. These were extremely hard to find, as MOJO‘s own website only mentions 4 of these CDs. We had some ready to go, and were about to appeal for the others, but our pal Angelo over at Power Pop Criminals posted all 10 of these last year. And, since PPC’s downloads are always top-notch (artwork, too), we decided to use Angelo’s in order to complete our little shrine to MOJO over here… with our sincere thanks. So, if your dreams have been answered with these discs, and you want to share some love, follow the link to Power Pop Criminals and give them our regards (and check out the mountains of other cool stuff there). Thanks, Angelo.

We’ve got over 100 MOJO‘s in the archives – except for the ones we’re posting next week, which will wrap up our Sunday MOJO posts. We’ll throw up a complete list then, too, just to see if we’re missing anything. Follow the links. All the MOJO‘s are listed near the bottom right of the blog.

MOJO PRESENTS x 3: The Greatest Single Of All Time (1997), OK Computer (2008), Destroy! (2008)

Three more freebies from the UK’s MOJO Magazine. The Greatest Single Of All Time is another of the earliest MOJO CD giveaways, from August, 1997. It’s a tiny tribute to “Good Vibrations” and includes a couple of extras along with two Brian Wilson interviews. OK Computer is a broad collection of pop-oriented electronic music from the last four decades. Honestly, I’ve never listened to it because all this time I thought it was a Radiohead tribute. Destroy is dedicated to punk, circa 1977. Not a bad collection, thanks to the offbeat selections and above average snottiness. Nearly 100 more MOJOs are waiting for you in the archives. More next Sunday.

MOJO PRESENTS: Up Yours! Punk’s Not Dead (2003), Trojan Explosion (2002), The Roots Of Hip Hop (2003)

Three more freebies from MOJO. Up Yours! Punk’s Not Dead is one of MOJO‘s earlier releases celebrating the punk movement, “then and now.” A generous 26 track comp. Trojan Explosion is a righteous 20 song collection of reggae tunes from the famed label. The Roots Of Hip Hop is from 2003, the second of four early ‘Music Guides’ from MOJO. But don’t dismiss it as hip-hop. It’s a ‘roots’ album that features the likes of James Brown, The Bar-Kays, Jimmy Castor, Al Green, Blood Sweat & Tears (?), and others.  There’s over 90 more MOJOs in our archives (click the gray bar). More next Sunday.

MOJO Presents x 3: Well… All Right! (2011), Piece Of Cake – 20 Years Of Ryko (2003) & Good Grooves Number 11 (1999)

Three more freebies from MOJO. The latest, from the September 2011 issue, is Well… All Right!, a collection of favorites compiled and sequenced by the magazine’s guest editor, Noel Gallagher (ex-Oasis). A bizarre set, indeed, with a lot of really good under-the-radar tunes. The Bonobo track is a mindbender, but check out the smokin’ cut from The Big Kids, below. Conway Twitty’s Elvis-ized “Lonely Boy Blue” is pure heaven. Piece Of Cake – 20 Years Of Ryko is, just as the name implies, a label sponsored collection from the great Ryko Records. Everyone from Big Star to Frank Zappa. Big thanks to Steward for sharing his copy with us all. Good Grooves Number 11 is the magazine’s 11th free CD, from 1999. If you want to get technical, it’s the 12th, but we’ll get into all that later. Only the Ryko collection can be found at Amazon, brand new for a penny. There’s over 90 more MOJOs in our archives (click the gray bar). Three more next Sunday.

MOJO Presents X 3: Raw Soul (2004), The Roots Of Led Zeppelin (2004) & Studio One Selector (2005)

Three more freebies from MOJO. Raw Soul is another of the early ‘Music Guides’ MOJO released when first beginning to issue themed collections. A beloved comp for its quality of material. You’d think The Roots Of Led Zeppelin would be yet another blues roots compilation the magazine is so fond of. Part of it is, naturally, but just to mess with the Zepheads MOJO has also included some hardcore folk (Joan Baez, John Fahey) and even a Spirit track – but not the one that Page lifted the “Stairway” riff from. Studio One Selector is an excellent collection of tracks from the famed roots reggae label. All can be found at Amazon (click the covers). There’s about 90 more MOJOs in our archives. Three more next Sunday.

MOJO PRESENTS x 3: The Roots Of Paul McCartney (2011) & Beatlemania/Volumes 1 & 2 (2006)

Three more freebies from MOJO. The latest, from the August 2011 issue, is The Roots Of Paul McCartney, a collection of roots and influences that, curiously, isn’t that far removed from a commercial CD of the same name that came out in 2009. Five of the tunes are identical. Don’t know whether to chastise MOJO for lack of originality… or thank them for making this one available for free. Beatlemania/Volume 1 and Beatlemania/Volume 2 were two of MOJO‘s earlier tributes to The Beatles, released the same month in 2004 (meaning you had to buy two of the same issues to get both), and includes a variety of artists tackling the music of the famed beat combo. Big thanks to Andrew F. and Johanna for the two Beatlemania discs, which can be found at Amazon (click the covers). There’s nearly 90 more MOJOs in our archives. Three more next Sunday.
