Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others(1978)
First Rate Boot
Excellent Stones boot from one of their last truly fertile periods, amidst the backdrop of the Some Girls Tour. Originally an FM broadcast, the sound is good (or, at least, typical of the period), while the performances are culled from shows in Detroit, Memphis and Houston, 1978. You wouldn’t know that to listen, however, as this gathering is well-paced and the performances are stripped and streamlined, thankfully missing much of the pomp and circumstance that would later infect the band’s live shows. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of this stuff wind up as official releases from The Stones Archive (we’ve got four of those releases in our archives). Find much more Stones… (including Live In England ’65, L.A.Friday (Live 1975), Sticky Fingers, Stripped (Deluxe), Palais Royal Ballroom (2002), Ladies And Gentlemen… The Rolling Stones (1972), 2120 South Michigan Ave. and Singles 1963-1965, 1965-1967 & 1968-1971) HERE.

Exactly Why Were All Those Girls Screaming, Anyway?
Disc four from the Charlie Is My Darling box set captures The Rolling Stones touring England in 1965… complete with screaming girls, over-stressed microphones and out-of-tune guitars. It’s a cool document though, even if the sound is only a couple notches up from bootleg quality. But we’re used to that from The Stones. Consisting of old rockers and blues covers and only a couple of Stones hits. The box set is at Amazon. Stones in the archives.

Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965 (2012)
DVD of Long Lost Early Stones Film
From Amazon: “ABKCO Films presents a meticulously restored and fully realized version of this first-ever, legendary, but never released film. Shot during a quick tour of Ireland just weeks after “(I Can t Get No) Satisfaction” hit # 1 on the charts, The Rolling Stones’ Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965 is an intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with the young Stones. It features the first professionally filmed concert performances of the band and documents the early frenzy of their fans and the riots the band s appearances inspired. The band is shown traveling through the Irish countryside by train; dashing from cabs to cramped, basement dressing rooms through screaming hordes of fans. Motel rooms host impromptu songwriting sessions and familiar classics are heard in their infancy as riff and lyric are united. The Super Deluxe Box Set includes both DVD and Blu-ray discs that incorporate the new 2012 version of the film as well as the director’s cut and producer’s cut, plus significant unseen additional performance and other footage shot in Dublin and Belfast in September of 1965, bonus content, two audio CDs, one of which is the film’s soundtrack album and the other a compilation of 13 live recordings the band made over the course of their 1965 UK tour. A 10 inch vinyl record of the live material is also part of the package, as well as a replica poster heralding the September 4, 1965 date they played in Belfast.” $71.99 @ Amazon for the Super Deluxe Box. There’s a standard $15.99 version, too.

Not a very creative freebie from the latest edition of MOJO, as there are dozens of these kinds of tributes to the Rolling Stones from various sources… but, you can’t fault the music. It’s some of the best on earth. I’ve got it on now and am loving every second of it.

Sticky Soul Fingers – A Rolling Stones Tribute(2011)
The latest free CD release from MOJO Magazine’s January 2012 issue is a tribute to The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, with a soul twist. I know virtually none of these artists, but all the tracks are (apparently) previously unreleased, so it’s a bit more than just a gathering of tired covers (click the bottom image for a pop-up). As you already know, these types of affairs are hit and miss, but the soul angle gives this album a boost, and if you’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about Sharon Jones (& The Dap-Kings), you can check out her chops on a rearranged “Wild Horses.” I was personally drawn to the raw, 60s-technology sound of The Sugarman 3′s instrumental cover of “Bitch” (hear both tracks below). But… how Anthony Joseph managed to turn “Dead Flowers” into a 60s black funk manifesto is anybody’s guess. The cover, of course, is a variation of one of the alternate designs for Sticky Fingers, released, then withdrawn, overseas. Don’t forget the 116 other MOJO‘s in the archives.
ALICE RUSSELL – Brown Sugar (3:03)
BLACK JOE LEWIS & THE HONEYBEARS – Sway (4:24) SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS – Wild Horses (5:32)

ALOE BLACC & JOEL VAN DIJK – I Got The Blues (4:10)
REN HARVIEW – Sister Morphine (2:32)
ANTHONY JOSEPH & THE SPASM BAND – Dead Flowers (5:50)
LEE FIELDS – Moonlight Mile (3:39)
BETA HECTOR – Angie (3:44) (Bonus Track)
BONUS: Sticky Fingers(1971)
A Stellar Mix Of One Of The Best Ever
Throw a rock and you’ll hit somebody that considers Sticky Fingers the greatest album ever made during the rock era. And, it is kind of hard to believe that all those incredible songs (and performances) are from just one album. I grabbed this 2010 SHM 320 in anticipation of wanting to hear it after the MOJO tribute. What a sheer joy to listen to. Above and beyond it being one of the all time greats, this mix is just gorgeous (with distinct acoustic guitars in “Brown Sugar“). I want to buy one just because I know I’d never need another. Only thing at Amazon is the 2010 SAC (which may or may not be equivalent – or may be the same disc). The import cover you see is part of the latest ’10s packaging. Just follow the tribute brick road for the music.
It’s a new era in catalog marketing and, of course, the business-minded Mick (and the ever-growing, EMI-buying mega-conglomerate, Universal) is there every step of the way. For the upgraded edition(s) of one of the band’s last “classic” albums, Some Girls, the marketing machine is going full throttle. Along with your basic 2CD Deluxe Edition ($20), you can now order Some GirlsSuper Deluxe Edition ($143, pictured), Some GirlsGift Case Set ($53), Some Girls Wig Box($180. Yes… Mick’s selling cosmetics now), Some Girls – Live In Texas ’78CD/DVD Combo ($22) and Some GirlsVinyl ($28… and I remember bitching when they went to $5). There’s probably lots more, but that’s what came up at Amazon during an “audio” search. I’ll let you click the links to see what all the marketing’s about. Notice how the 2CD set is moderately priced. Since it’s something that’s easily put online, it’s nice priced to attract everybody (fans and pirates alike). The real money comes in selling the era itself, t-shirts in spray cans, lipstick, buttons, pictures and assorted crap that won’t upload. All are available for pre-order. Release date: November 21. The Brussels Affair ’73(2011)
Download Direct From The Stones
Thanks to Gerald for sending us the link to the Rolling Stones new download site, The Rolling Stones Archive. Their first bootleg release, The Brussels Affair ’73, is from one of the band’s most highly acclaimed unreleased series of shows. The site accurately points out that the files have been traded online for years, cobbled together from different sources. These files (which we weren’t able to hear yet) are from Andy Johns’ original master tapes. Excuse me… my pants are wet. Mick’s selling them for $7 (@256) & $9 (FLAC). Pretty amazing. UPDATE: Apparently, Stateside buyers are shut out for the time being, but our pal Pete found where to get it from Google for only $4.99. Thanks to all.
Stripped (Deluxe Edition) (1995) The 2nd Best Live Stones Album?
If you’ve listened to The Stones long enough to know when they’re not up to their own standards, you’ve probably also had a love/hate affair with their live albums. One of them is essential, and side four of another is brilliant, but many of the rest are simply documents of The Rolling Stones being The Rolling Stones – characterized by sped-up arrangements, exaggerated vocals and zero intimacy. But The Stones did something unique for their 1995 tour and resulting live album, Stripped. Instead of just recording yet another live spectacle, this time the band taped their rehearsals instead, along with a few intimate concerts, and assembled a collection of beautifully rendered classics that must rank among the group’s finest live recordings. Skip the first 2 songs - they’re just loud, arena-styled versions of “Street Fighting Man” & “Like A Rolling Stone” (used for promotional purposes). After those typical attention-getters, you’ll find a lost treasure of richly-detailed, prime unplugged Stones that captures the essence of the original material, track after track after track. Imagine “Wild Horses,” “Sweet Virginia” and “Dead Flowers” performed with the proper conviction and speed, with none of the pomp & circumstance that usually accompanies a live Stones date. The band has always managed moments of intimacy, but hearing them pull it off like this, at this late date, is a total surprise, making Stripped the best live example of The Stones’ soft white underbelly you’ll likely ever hear. Possibly their last great live album. In addition to the oft-ignored original CD, there were B-sides, too. This faux Deluxe Edition gathers those together, along with some of the unreleased club material. It’s not all unplugged, but it’s all excellent. The original 1CD Stripped is at Amazon for under a buck (often as cheap as a penny).

In A Club… They Are The Greatest Rock ‘n Roll Band In The World
Here’s a great live Stones bootleg from a tour warm-up club gig, recorded at the Palais Royale Ballroom in Toronto, August 16th, 2002. Don’t let the year of this recording put you off. In a club setting, the Stones are at their best and the intimate confines, excellent sound and largely pre-1975 set list make for a great, raw Stones experience. Jagger’s in fine form and the guitars are crisp and classic. Listen for yourself.

Bill Wyman Rejoins The Fold
The big recent Stones news is that Bill Wyman rejoined his mates to record some music for the forthcoming Ian Stewart tribute album, Boogie 4 Stu, credited to pianist Ben Waters. Listen below to the Stones covering Bob Dylan’s “Watching The River Flow.” The musicians are Mick Jagger (vocal/harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar), Ronnie Wood (guitar), Charlie Watts (drums), Bill Wyman(bass), Ben Waters (piano), Jools Holland (Hammond), Willy Garnet, Don Wellor, Alex Garnet & Tom Waters (saxophones) & Dave Swift (tambourine). The long, slow wind down is sublime. Pre-order the April 19th release at Amazon. There’s plenty more Stones in the archives.
Ladies & Gentlemen…The Rolling Stones(1972)
Unofficial Film Soundtrack
Since certain areas of the country would never get anywhere near a Stones world tour, this “Quadrophonic Film Concert” (as it was billed) was about the next best thing. It’s from the Stones’ 1972 Exile On Main Street Tour, recorded in Texas over four nights, and the band line-up features Mick Taylor, along with auxiliary greats like Nicky Hopkins and Bobby Keys. So it’s hard to go wrong with this set, which sounds about as good as any other live material from the Stones during this period. Wiki has some detailed information about how unique the film was. This particular post is some variation of a soundboard version, as no official soundtrack has been released. A DVD was finally issued just last month after decades in storage.Amazon has it, and the standard, expensive box set. (@320)

A wonderful, straight up blues tune that was originally recorded during the Steel Wheels sessions and released as a B-side to 1989′s “Mixed Emotions.” The song also surfaced on the various artists LP, After The Hurricane (Songs For Montserrat) and, as I’ve since learned, on The Stones’ so-called Rarities 1971-2003. Just one more reason why I pray The Stones record a full blues album before the end of days. We’ve got more Stones in the archives.

Live At Chess Studios
I had originally scored these Chess Studio sessions via some of those awful Russian bootleg two-fers that once used them as filler bonus tracks. Someone repackaged them with better, studio quality files and a spiffy fake cover for this pleasing collection. I’m not the biggest fan of the early Stones – they were just a bit rudimentary and stiff for my tastes – especially the British Invasion stuff they would traffic in. But these early live recordings made at the famed Chess Studios in Chicago (the place they made a beeline for when they first toured the States) are a lively dose of loose rockin‘ British blues, from a band that wouldn’t even truly understand the stuff for another five years or so. Five of these tracks were released on the 1964 UK EP, 5 X 5. It’s not all root blues material, there’s a lot of Chuck, and why that live version of “Satisfaction” was even added to this set is odd, but this “unreleased album” makes a great case for the Stones’ blues authenticity… if only they had not followed so closely in the pop trail blazed by The Beatles’ success. They would finally come home again for Beggars Banquet & the Mick Taylor years.

The Rolling Stones (with Mick Taylor), rehearsing live in Montreux, May, 1972. 20 minutes spread over 3 videos. With versions of “Tumblin‘ Dice,” “Shake Your Hips” and a couple of nameless jams, proving once again how essential The Stones are live when Mick’s not playing to the crowd.
