THE RAMONES We’re Outta Here! (1997) – The Final Concert!

FrontWe’re Outta Here! (1997)
Say Goodnight, Gracie.

The Ramones’ final concert, recorded August 6, 1996, wasn’t really all that different from the 2,262 shows that preceded it… in spirit anyway. This show, eulogized on a double disc the following year, includes a bunch of like-minded pals along for the ride, paying and playing their respects for one of rock’s most dedicated, gun-sticking rock ‘n roll mainstays. Dee Dee Ramone shows up, along with members of Soundgarden, Motorhead and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, among others. But the two-minute wonders themselves are, to mis-quote David Byrne, the same as they ever were. And that’s OK. We’ve got more Ramones in the archives, including the first nine albums (Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket To Russia, Road To Ruin, It’s Alive, End Of The Century, Pleasant Dreams, Subterranean Jungle and Too Tough To Die), the Bonus Tracks collection, Acid Eaters and another live show, Jan 7, 1978 At The Palladium, NYC – along with a few Ramones-related oddities – all HERE. Find We’re Outta Here at Amazon, HERE, which includes a video documentary with clips from the concert.

FrontLive, January 7, 1978 At The Palladium, NYC (2004)
Hey Ho

There’s pretty much nothing left to write about these guys, is there? You already know what to expect. This release first came out in 2003, as part of the King Biscuit Archive Series (with a different cover) and was recorded a week after the UK New Year’s Eve show that would become the album, It’s Alive… with essentially the same set list. That said, the quality here isn’t bad for a King Biscuit live show – often distinctive for their tinny, one-dimensional recordings. 27 songs in 56 minutes… in NYC. We’ve got more Ramones in the archive, including the first 9 CDs in the reissue series (HERE), The Ramones Bonus Tracks 1976-1984 (including Live At The Roxy, HERE), their classic covers album, Acid Eaters (HERE) and a few straggler posts (HERE). PATTI SMITH Twelve (2007) + THE RAMONES Acid Eaters (1994)

frontfront

PATTI SMITH Twelve (2007)
THE RAMONES Acid Eaters (1994)
Punks On 45

Two well executed covers albums from a couple of punks. Patti Smith tackles Hendrix (“Are You Experienced?”), JeffAir (“White Rabbit”), The Beatles (“Within You Without You”) and some left field choices like Paul Simon (“The Boy In The Bubble”) and Tears For Fears (“Everybody Wants To Rule The World”). The results are calmly reflective but, overall, pretty decent – depending on how you like your covers covered… and how much you like Patti Smith. The Ramones, on the other hand, don’t leave any interpretations to chance on Acid Eaters, bending and breaking most of their renditions to fit into The Ramones’ mould, with little concern for the originals. But, since they’ve gathered a lot of catchy, irresistible rockers to emulate (The Who’s “Substitute,” Max Frost & The Troopers’ “The Shape Of Things To Come,” & JeffAir’s “Somebody To Love”), the success rate is extremely high. Acid Eaters remains one of my favorite Ramones albums, but I grew up with the same shit they did, so it’s to be expected. Check the archives for more Smith (Horses/Horses Live & Gung Ho, HERE) and Ramones (Bonus Tracks, 9 Studio Albums, HERE). Twelve (HERE) & Acid Eaters (HERE) are @ Amazon.

A set of bonus tracks pulled together from our previously posted Ramones reissue albums, circa ’76-’84. Disclaimer: I did no additional research to see if there are any stray bonuses from ancient reissues, but this 3 disc equivalent is a fun spin, regardless. Leave Home‘s additional CD is a live show recorded at The Roxy – which we broke out separately just for even splits. Get the original reissues, a Joey Xmas EP and some tributes & oddities (like their version of “Spider-Man”) HERE.

JOEY RAMONE Christmas Spirit… In My House (2002)

Christmas Spirit Spirit… In My House (2002)
Hey Ho… Ho Ho

This is about as Christmas-y as we get around here. This… and The Beatles Christmas Album (HERE). I don’t know much about how this holiday EP was constructed, but it was most likely similar to Joey’s posthumous solo album, Don’t Worry About Me (whose title track is reprised here), with a lot of friends finishing off material Joey had been working on before his death in 2001. The lead off track, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” is the Phil Spector classic penned by Barry/Greenwich, and Ronnie Spector shows up here to lend some vocal support. We’ve got a slew of Bonus Track Ramones in the archives (HERE). Pretty expensive at Amazon (HERE).

VARIOUS ARTISTS Saturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits (1995)

coverSaturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits (1995)
Pure Pop For Pre-People

The All Music Guide simply hated it, but they just had the wrong attitude. Some of the purest pop music written is in the form of cartoon theme songs; meant by design to be short, sticky and easy to digest. Having a slew of alt bands covering those classic Saturday morning pop fests is a cool enough idea. I would have prefered less nineties alt (Helmet, Butthole Surfers, Toadies) and more genuine popsters (Matthew Sweet, Material Issue, Semisonic), but that’s to be expected, since this was released in 1995. It’s true, however, that turning 30 & 60 second themes into 3-1/2 minute pop songs means “filler” becomes a natural part of the process. The artists tend to use those moments to insert their own personalities and ticks. Still, like any various artist/concept, you’ll always want to lose some of the participants. But when the idea works (“The Tra La La Song,” “Josie And The Pussycats,” “Jonny Quest”), it works well. Matthew Sweet plays “Scooby Doo” completely straight-faced, and you can tell the Buttholes are having a blast with “Underdog.” Find it at Amazon (HERE), along with expensive vinyl (HERE) and VHS versions (HERE).

MOJO Presents: 1-2-3-4!

1-2-3-4! (2011)
MOJO‘s Roots Of The Ramones

Here’s the latest from MOJO‘s May, 2011 issue. The Ramones themselves set the tone (with Walter Lure of Johnny Thunder’s Heartbreakers) on a fun version of “Street Fighting Man,” but Marc Bolan moves the proceedings into a New York salute to 50s girl group sass and downtown punk, with some friends, influences and a few curios. The non-LP Ronnie Spector cover of the Joey-produced, “She Talks To Rainbows,” is outstanding, while the Dolls’ “Personality Crisis” comes from the pre-LP, Mercer Street demos (Lipstick Killers), thankfully. Lord knows how many “Personalities” I’ve gotten from MOJO over the years (not to mention Love’s “7 And 7 Is”). The Trashmen offer a virtual rewrite of their hit, “Surfin‘ Bird,” called “Bird Dance Beat.” One of the series’ best covers, too. Artwork included.

THE RAMONES Bonus Track Reissues 1976-1984

There’s not much to say about the Ramones. Their unrelenting riffs and monosyllabic utterings have earned credence via their purity and consistency, as the band stayed true to their basic school of rock all the way to the grave. True, there were plenty of second-rate albums along the way, but you couldn’t question the band’s sincerity. This is a collection of bonus track editions from 1976 to 1984. The first three should be in any collection. It’s Alive (its “greatest live album ever” reputation notwithstanding) is so righteous it didn’t even need any bonus tracks. Leave Home‘s new additions make up a 16-tune live show from The Roxy, August 12, 1976. Their co-producer’s list is something of a weird read; Phil Spector (End Of The Century), Graham Gouldman (Pleasant Dreams), Ed Stasium (Road To Ruin), Ritchie Cordell (Subterranean Jungle), Dave Stewart, Tony Bongiovi, Tommy Erdelyi and Craig Leon. That’s not even mentioning Bill Laswell (1989′s Brain Drain). Click the covers for links to Amazon, where most of these are going cheap.
