Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog – Chess Collectibles, Vol. 2

MUDDY WATERS One More Mile – Chess Collectibles, Vol. 1 (1994)
HOWLIN’ WOLF Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog – Chess Collectibles, Vol. 2 (1994)
You Shouldn’t Need A Sell Job On The Chess Collectibles Series

These 2CD sets, gathered together in the mid-90s, are comprised almost entirely of tracks unreleased in the USA; foreign 45s, alternate versions and some newly uncovered and previously unreleased rarities. The detailed liner notes (and gorgeous photos of Muddy) are why you’re advised to follow the links and score hard copies for yourself. They’re both kind of like alternate universe career retrospectives that you’ve never heard before, unless you’re one of those seriously disturbed 45 collectors with a oxygen controlled vault and an ex-wife or two. There’s more Muddy in the archives; Fathers And Sons, The Complete Plantation Recordings and Hoochie Coochie Man (a great 1964 live recording). There’s more Wolf, too; The Chess Box, Memphis Days Vols. 1 & 2 and Live In Europe 1964.  Find the Muddy and Wolf Chess Collectibles at Amazon.

What I like about these records is the tangible sense of sweat. Unlike many of the facile blues records of today where the sound is incorrectly pristine — the more hiss, the better. The hoo hah is a necessary centerpiece to the table.

Sometimes it sounds to me like these tunes were worked out on the fly. Great stuff. Thanks

I’m a Muddy man, myself, but Wolf is the better of these two particular comps.

It is that I have the Howlin’ Wolf – The Complete Chess Studio Recordings 1951-1969 – Box (7cd’s) and Muddy Waters – The Complete Muddy Waters 1947-1967 – 9cd box, otherwise these 2 double cd’s would be perfect. Two masters, absolute masters.

That hiss you’re hearing is steam rising from the tracks…thanks for putting this deep-dish blues treat up here…

    Thanks again Willard, great post!
BTW, does anyone know if any of Howlin’ Wolf’s recordings from after 1967 (New Album, Message Tot The Young, etc.) have ever been rereleased??

I finally bought the Muddy set tonight from Amazon. Thanks for all you do; it really makes a big difference when I can hear an album first before I buy it.

Thanks 3410. It WAS wrong, but then I fixed it when I posted it in C-Bpx. So, I don’t know if we just crossed paths or if a refresh is needed. Either way, it should be OK now. Thanks.
