Fast Food For Thought (1990)
Henry Rollins’ Go-Go/Punk Side Project
A twisted favorite of mine from the early 90s. Vocalist Henry Rollins, with riffing bassist Andrew Weiss, collaborating on what can only be deemed as some kind of Go-Go/Rant hybrid. Anybody who’s partial to those amp-on-11 bass lines King Crimson’s John Wetton used to traffic in, will get a kick out of Weiss’ nervous, wiry, dive-bombing bass assault – taking the place of leads in the absence of other primary instrumentation. One of the record’s few “solos” is the snippet of a Boston (the band) song haphazardly tossed into the middle of “The Whole Truth.” The beats, reportedly drum machines, are a direct result of Rollins’ fascination with Washington D.C.’s Go-Go scene (read Rollins’ liner notes on our Trouble Funk post, HERE), as they replicate the auxiliary percussion bent of Go-Go’s unforgiving (sometimes hour-long) propulsion and drive. In fact, the bulk of this shortened LP – “Wartime,” “Right To Life” and “The Whole Truth” – all sound like three parts of the same “song.” How a Grateful Dead cover got in there is anybody’s guess. As cheap as a penny at Amazon, HERE.
