Bonus Tracks And Rarities (2013)
Alternate Universe View Of The Late Great Zevon
Major thanks to B for offering up virtually all of these bonus tracks and rarities from various Warren Zevon reissues over the years. Numerous albums have yet to bother with any additions, but the ones that have are all here – including the disc long set of outtakes and demos from Zevon’s self-titled breakthrough. Also in this set are a slew of rarities that first surfaced on the Anthology, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead. Even more rarities can be found of the posthumously released, Preludes: Rare And Unreleased Recordings (find that HERE), and even that set was later issued with three bonus tracks. Almost all of these extras were new to me, and I’ve had a great time listening to it this past weekend, so I’m sure you’ll like it, too. Thanks to B for delivering all this (and, while you’re here, help him with a few Zevon rarities he’s looking for, “Up On The Cross” and “I’m A Shadow Of Him”). Also thanks to 3410 and The Artíste aka MelGibson for answering the call and filling in the missing blanks in this collection. Find more Zevon in the archives, HERE.

Thank you very much
Thank you very much – wonderful work!!!!! You efforts bring much joy to my day.
Saints be praised! You’ve done it again. These bonus track collections are the absolute best! Warren Zevon is, as you all know, an incredible writer. This guy was a couple years ahead of me in high school and went to cross town rival Sunny Hills High School he was buddies with Jackson Brown and wrote ‘Ouside Chance’ for The Turtles. Sorry I was getting away from myself, I’m back now. Thank you so very much Willard. Keep up the exceptional work.
Love

This looks pretty good. Thank you Willard. :)
How about the Bonus tracks only treatment for some guy named George Ivan (aka Belfast Cowboy)? I have these and would be willing to get them to you in some fashion, though I have no real practice at doing this stuff. The bonuses never got finished (some of the albums were never released with bonuses as planned), but there’s about 2 CD’s worth of good material which is now somewhat difficult to obtain. They went out of print pretty quickly. Let me know if you’re interested…but I may need some instruction on how to make it happen.
Thanks for the offer, but I don’t post him here. His people have too many sheriffs and watchers that cause problems for posts and blogs. That’s trouble I don’t really need. Appreciate the thought, though.
Ok…fair enough. I noticed he’s somewhat difficult hard to find on these circuits…I’ve bought everything he’s ever sold, so I’m not really looking for anything.
Thanks Willard – somewhere packed away are IDs from KSAN radio in SF, and one is WZ doing a promo ala Werewolves – it was a great interview too at the time – as always, hope all is well = Cheers!
Excellent collection of tidbits Willard! (a music tapas bar, to be sure) Over the past decade, I’ve had arguments at cocktail parties & supermarkets concerning the modern tendency to release unreleased tracks for an artist’s orginal album. Some folks tend to see red & think it violates the artist’s original creative statement: “y’know, if they’d wanted these songs to come out, they would’ve put ‘em on the album! Sheesh!” But to me, it always adds more depth to the original album and definitely reveals the multi-layered elements of the artistic process as a whole. I think the folks who get upset by this sort of thing are really mad because they might have to learn to like the original album all over again, eh? “Oh why oh why did the Lizard King cut a demo where he sang ‘love is like a spare tire’ instead of ‘try to set the night on fire’ ?!!”
I think it’s simpler than that. Some people egotistically believe that their vision of an album (usually their first, original brush with it) is the only way to understand a piece of work. That’s how they arrived at their belief of its merits, so that’s how everybody should arrive at the same place. It’s little more than arrogance. Regarding bonuses: That’s especially clueless since many bonus tracks are approved by the artists themselves. But, I personally think anyone who has the gall to speak on behalf of an artist’s intentions, usually have their heads halfway up their asses already. Since, in many cases, the “artist’s intentions” were already wildly manipulated by managers and record companies before the so-called arbiters of artistic expression even heard the work in the first place. As any political or musical forum bears out, there’s no shortage of people who are outraged at the mere whiff of a slight to their fragile sensibilities. People who truly enjoy music, on the other hand, are more as you suggest… interested in a bigger picture, or in the process, or simply more of the same from their favorite artists. Like wanting a few more chips when the bag is empty. Besides, reissues and bonuses are generally created for the pursuit of money… which is hardly an artistic endeavor on the part of the artists who approve them. To quote Edward G. Robinson… “Where’s your Messiah now?”
On YouTube, a guy who calls himself “warrenzevonfanatic” has several full length concerts posted. This link is for an ’82 show, but sift through his channel to find 6 or 7 more:

Very cool. Thanks DonFO.
Looks great. Well done, guys.
Thanks again, 3410.
Willard: I appreciate the recognition for the bonus tracks; however, I owe you an even bigger shout out for keeping this site going and for delivering the goods on a near daily basis. I’ve learned much about music from you, and am only thankful to have played a minuscule part. Thanks again.
Oh, and as to the video that “Don From Oregon” posted; I have that as well in 720HD; if you Don, or Willard would like it. Just let me know and I will upload and provide links. I have all of the shows that WarrenZevionAddict (who is the man) posted, plus a few more.
Or, alternatively, you can use a site such as keepvid.com to download directly from youtube. All you do is paste the link in the box on keepvids site and press the button, and voila, you have your choice of formats and video definitions. I wish I would have known about that sooner instead of having to barter for the concerts!
Thanks B. I appreciate the offer, but I’m not much of a video file collector myself. I’m one of the masses completely satisfied with YouTube’s instant access (it’s where I park 10 million files for free). Good to mention keepvid… they’re easy to use and have helped me immensely with scoring videos for For The Love Of Harry. Many thanks again for the Zevon idea and files.
W, I have to thank you. Until you started posting about WZ, all I ever knew was Werewolves. Now I think the guy was amazing. At various times an awful person (and at other times not so awful), but decidedly amazing. Thank you.
Cool, glad you’re digging him. I was indoctrinated early on and caught him live a couple of times, though I’m more of a casual fan. A lot of these extras are new to me, too.
Thanks so much for this fine collection. Though Warren will never overtake Jim Reeves, I still enjoy listening to any and everything he recorded. Plus it brings back so many great memories. All the best,
Iggy
Jim Reeves?
Hello Captain – and, as always, thanks for these.
First time I heard of a/o about Warren Zevon – was at The Main Point in Bryne Mawr and Jackson Browne was talking about (and did) 3 of his songs – and, to be honest, some of us thought he was using somebody else’s name to see if the ‘new’ material went over well. He did “Hasten Down The Wind”; “Mohammed’s Radio” and “Werewolves Of London”. A few months later – went back to The Main Point….after purchasing Warren Zevon’s 1st album!
Saw him a few times since his first visit to the Philadelphia area and continued until “The Wind” . Thanks, again, for this wonderful spot on the web…

May The Headless Gunner be always & forever be by your side, as bodyguard, spiritual guide, life-saver and everything else a Captain needs for a good life this side of the jungle! THX so much, TC
Speaking of his rarities, not sure if anyone cares, but Zevon said in interviews that he never once publicly performed “Empty Handed Heart” (which happens to be my all-time favorite song). Well apparently, there was a concert tribute put on last year, and his son Jordan Zevon sang it. I thoughjt it was pretty cool to finally hear a live rendition, especially by his son. If anyone is interested:

Thanks again B
Three words – or, 3 letters – OMG. This looks AMAZING. Thank you so much, Willard, and thank you for sharing, B, 3410 and The Artíste aka MelGibson.
I’m a Zevon fanatic so I already have some of this (same albums in more than one reissue, vinyl, CD, even cassette in some cases), but I don’t have all of it. And, to have it collected in one spot. Amazing.
Probably you all know but http://archive.org/details/WarrenZevon has a nice amount of live recordings of Warren Zevon. Worth to start digging.
As for this collection, terrific! Thx
That website is amazing! There’s a 1/21/83 recording from his solo show at The Roxy – and at a point when he asks for suggestions, you can very clearly hear me yell out “Never Too Late For Love.” There’s no audible response, but we were close to the stage – he just looked at me and shook his head “no.”
Wow Anonymous, that’s a really great story. That’s another incredible song of his that I’ve never heard a live version of. Have you come across one?
thanks for putting together this great collection.
Has the full version of Warren’s cover of The Last Time from The Wind sessions ever circulated?
Genius! Thanks for this (and everything else).
Just what I was looking for! I actually have a lone track labeled ‘Up On The Cross’ which features the phrase ‘I’m A Shadow Of Him’. So I have something but I’m not sure what, and of course I have no idea where I got it. I hope it’s okay to leave a link.

Thanks again for this oddballs comp.
By all means, thanks… you may have killed two birds with one stone, too.
Thanks SO, SO MUCH. I still think “Up On the Cross” may be its own song based on others who swore they have heard it, but who the hell knows. This is incredible; thanks again.
Spent my evening with some of my favorite WZ ,and now I get to keep right on howling. Thanks to All !
