EVIL STIG Evil Stig (1995) – a.k.a. Joan Jett & The Gits

Joan Jett Gets Her Punk On

One of Joan Jett’s most powerful releases. A tribute collaboration with members of Seattle’s The Gits to honor their murdered lead singer, Mia Zapata. Evil Stig (Gits Live backwards) boasts mostly hard-driving punk that benefits from Jett’s studio smarts, lending The Gits’ music and full-frontal approach a listenability the original band often lacked due to miniscule budgets and anti-commercial instincts. That said, Jett makes a point of mixing more accessible offerings into the fray, and a few tracks are recorded live. Longtime producer Kenny Laguna is on board, too. You can hear Jett duet with Zapata’s recorded voice on “Whirlwind.” There’s a curious, spruced-up version of Jett’s famed cover of “Crimson & Clover,” that, for whatever reason, is not given the punk treatment. Don’t be fooled by the final track’s 17:19 track time, as it features 15 minutes of silence [and a track I missed completely] before a :30 second vocal requiem. In 2002, a Seattle detective matched DNA evidence to locate Zapata’s killer, who was sentenced to 36 years in prison. Find Evil Stig at Amazon, HERE.

Willard, one quick note about the last track, Drunks. It’s not a full fifteen minutes of silence before the requiem. About halfway thru there is a hidden track titled “Go Home” which was co-written by Joan Jett and Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill) in response to Mia Zapata’s death. Then there is another few minutes of silence before the requiem. For all you completists out there!

Thanks. I only spot checked the 15 minutes and must have missed it completely.
