PROCOL HARUM Live On WPLJ-FM (1971)

coverLive At WPLJ-FM (1971)
Robin Trower’s Last Stand

A popular Procol Harum live bootleg from an appearance at WPLJ-FM radio in April, 1971. It’s beloved by fans for two reasons, its good sound and its historical significance – as it captures guitarist Robin Trower’s last live appearance before his split with the band. I found this lingering on my hard drive while putting together the Bonus Tracks post and thought I’d throw it out there for anyone interested that doesn’t already have it lingering on their hard drive. Includes a good cross-section of material and “hits” from their albums. We’ve got all of PH’s albums from 1968-1977 (Procol Harum, Shine On Brightly, A Salty Dog, Home, Broken Barricades, Live In Concert With The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Grand Hotel, Exotic Birds And Fruits, Procol’s Ninth and Something Magic), a box set and the aforementioned Bonus Tracks collection in the archives. HERE.

Memorial Drive (3:23)
Still There’ll Be More (5:07)
Nothing That I Didn’t Know (4:18)
Simple Sister (3:00)
Luskus Delph (4:21)
Shine On Brightly (4:35)
Whaling Stories (9:54)
Broken Barricades (3:19)
Juicy John Pink (4:18)
A Salty Dog (5:12)
Whisky Train (4:19)
Power Failure (9:08)

Heard about this one, but never actually heard it, so thanks for posting. While I’m thinking about it, thanks too for all the work on the Bonus Tracks series. Always worthwhile material and it’s great to have access to it without having to purchase a multi-disc box set!

A great show to be sure…and a keeper due to the sound quality. BTW, loving the bonus tracks…it’s like being on a cruise ship with an endless buffet.

Always wanted to hear Whiskey Train live with Trower…Dave Ball did a formidable job when I saw them, but I might have been expecting too much after King Crimson opened for them.

By the way, I never realized there actually was a WPLJ station…gives a whole new meanin to

“the w’s the White, the p is the Port, the l is the Lemon and the j is the Juice”…

    Thanx Willard…

While I don’t “already have it lingering on their (my) hard drive”, I do have the 7″ reel tape that I recorded the show on when it was originally broadcast. It was/is a great show and indeed “Robin’s Last Stand” as he succumbed to a severe case of Hendrix-itis after this (from which he’s never fully recovered).

It’s also perfect timing to revisit this concert as I’m currently reading Henry Scott-Irvine’s new bio of Procol Harum.

And, for others – like KDNYfm -who may not know: WPLJ was formerly known as WABC-FM. They changed their call letters to distance themselves from their “All-American” AM counterparts.

    Willard,
Excellent recording! Great band. I love your site. It’s the first thing I check every morning after I get to work and power up my computer. As I’ve read several times in here, You have been on one hell of a roll!

    Love

@Steve Simels or @fiscus 1:Any chance either of you recalls the original date of this show?

I can find nothing more specific than April, 1971.
