Yo! I Killed Your God (1999)
Exercises In Inexplicable Extremes
I don’t post a lot of the noisier stuff I sometimes listen to, since there never seems to be much call for it. But, I thought I’d offer up this 1999 release from guitarist extraordinaire, Marc Ribot – best known as stringman to the stars (Costello, Burnett, Plant & Krauss, Krall… too many to name, really). I first turned onto him via his work with Tom Waits in the mid-80s, then through John Zorn’s downtown avant-ramblings, but his solo work is also an intriguing diversion, as he’s bound to indulge in everything from sheer noise making to obtuse tinkering to exercises in inexplicable extremes. I admit, myself, that some of his stuff is tough to endure, but… life’s too short to quibble, and you only go around once in life, so you’ve gotta grab for all the gusto you ca… wait, where have I heard that before? If Yo! I Killed Your God is too chaotic for your sensibilities (and you won’t be alone), then at least you can credit this post with pointing you to his two outstanding albums of raw, instrumental Cuban garage dance music, as Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos (The Prosthetic Cubans), HERE. Check out Ribot’s work on John Zorn Plays The Music Of Ennio Morricone, HERE. NOTE: Nothing on this LP really sounds the same, so the streaming player should probably be considered misleading. Schaweet!
Well, the title’s intriguing, so I’ll give it a go … Jonathan Richman shouts?
Cap’n,
Never underestimate our capacity to enjoy/endure ‘noise’ :)
Looking forward to hearing this one!
I know you’re out there… just not in big numbers.
Enjoyed your comment – - “noise” – I listen to a lot of Zorn’s musics as well! On the other hand, speaking of Ribot, up and around the ‘net you can find a show that Ribot did with Allen Toussaint – in Sweden in August of 2011 – some of it can be seen a/o heard on the ‘Net
Thanks
Thanks G. You’re welcomed to post a link if you’d like.
I don’t listen to much noise, but I like to know it’s out there defining the boundaries. Mark Ribot is … interesting. In any case, I’m glad you bought him to our attention. By the way, let me say that Zippyshare has turned out to be a really good vehicle for your always outstanding and much appreciated posts.
I forget which of our readers suggested ZS, but it has turned out quite nice. Of course… so was MF until they had to change things. Will see how long it all lasts. Thanks.
Pretty obnoxious title, plays into stereotypes.
Can’t imagine which ones.
