Curse Of The Demon (1957)

NightofthedemonposterCURSE OF THE DEMON (1957) a.k.a. Night Of The Demon PROGRAMMING CHANGE: We had originally posted Night Of The Demon but, sadly, that vid got pulled. So, instead, we’re now running the abbreviated US counterpart, Curse Of The Demon. Now you know. This psychological monster tale was an honest-to-god fright back in the late 50s. Making use of the time-tested cinematic theory that suggests the monster in your mind is more frightening than the one on the screen, Night Of The Demon makes the most of the eerie English surrounds and a demonic curse to reel in the easily spooked. The story centers around an American psychologist (Dana Andrews), known for his anti-paranormal beliefs, who comes face-to-face with an apparent Satanist, Karswell, and suddenly finding himself in the thick of things he can’t explain. As is often the case, the British acting union has more seriousness to offer the monster movie genre than those teenage counterparts found in Hollywood. You know Spielberg is schooled in this style of filmaking – as it opens with some high energy action/suspense before settling down to the plot – and Martin Scorsese is already on record as calling it one of his top horror movie faves. Dialog Alert: “I’m not a superstitious sucker like ninety per cent of humanity.” Night Of The Demon is the UK original. Curse Of The Demon is the abridged, US version. Find them both at Amazon on one DVD, HERE New Movies, Fridays ‘Round Midnight.

“It’s in the trees! It’s coming!” – best quote from Night of The Demon. Kate Bush used it as the intro to her songs “Hounds Of Love”.

It may be old but this is a seriously good film, adapted from an MR James short story “Casting the Runes”. Thanks Willard for this and all the great music you post!

Yeah, bummer. It was a nice print, too. We’re now running the US version, Curse Of The Demon. Not a lot of difference.
