THE SMITHEREENS Meet The Smithereens! (2007) + B-Sides The Beatles

Meet The Smithereens! (2007)
B-Sides The Beatles (2008)
Smithermania?

Except for the Smithereens’ easily identifiable DNA (those effectively dour vocals, the minor key fixation), these two tribute discs are faithful examples of The Beatles’ influence on kids of the 60s. Meet The Smithereens! is a song-for-song tribute to Meet The Beatles! (the American debut), while B-Sides The Beatles is, as the name suggests, b-sides of various early Beatles singles. There’s nothing written past 1964, so it’s obvious where The Smithereens’ passions lie. No real surprises, but the instrumentation is dead-on and the ancient Lennon/Harrison co-write, “Cry For A Shadow,” is a note-perfect blast. Andy White, the session drummer who temporarily replaced Ringo during the recording of “P.S. I Love You,” returns 45 years later to play the same part here. So dig out your checklist…

Everyone else should find themselves duly entertained, at least for a spin. My apologies for not combining these two 28 minute discs into a single zip. Below is an NPR interview with Pat DiNizio and drummer Dennis Diken
(with some music from Meet The Smithereens!), where they explain how this entire diversion got started. Both Meet and B-Sides are @ Amazon.
