Monday Night (2009)
Download-Only Live Set
Patricia Barber is devastatingly cool. Her voice is a sultry, cynically dispassionate dose of modern jazz indifference that (literally) stopped me in my tracks… and even stopped me from ever listening to Diana Krall again. Nothing against Mrs. Costello’s classic style, but Barber’s smooth jazz is more dangerous, more alive, more personal. Additionally, her band is a hotshot gathering of avant players that can easily play it straight, before taking to the nether regions at the drop of a hi-hat. She opens this 2006 Chicago set with my favorite of her original tunes, “A Touch Of Trash,” so you’re forced to listen to it below. There’s another version on an earlier Barber post in the archives. This release is only available as a download from Barber (or Amazon). She’s also just released Monday Night, Vol. 2.
Touch of Trash (7:52)
The Moon (7:06)
Narcissus (4:07)
Company (9:25)
Autumn Leaves (4:08)
Groovin‘ High (17:22)

I find it staggering that such a suberb artist does not even garner one miserable comment. She is a superb musician/singer/songwriter leaving Krall in the shade, and the musicianship of her band is wonderful to listen to.
Go figure. Thanks for breaking the cycle.
