Record Club No. 1: The Velvet Underground & Nico
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)
A Record Club That Can’t Screw You
Even if you don’t like Beck, and even if you don’t like The Velvet Underground, you have to like this idea. Beck and his pals have started a record club and the concept is a simple one; pick a famous album, record it live in the studio in one day and then release a weekly track on the Internet machine. Including videos of the live sessions. This is the first album in the series, a recreation of 1967′s The Velvet Underground & Nico. “Black Angel’s Death Song” is a standout, but you can hear “I’m Waiting For The Man” below, just because I thought it was funny. Compare it to the original. Beck & The Boys have already started on #2, Songs of Leonard Cohen, and a few videos are already up at Beck’s website. Nice price, too. (@320)

Hey, This is great !!! I've been putting together a compilation of V.U. tribute stuff and this will complete it. Thanks for the info and of course the post ! My favorite is a tribute album from South America called
Tributo Argentino a:The Velvet Underground & Nico, it's truly brilliant. If you haven't heard it I'll upload and post the link for you and the rest of your readers…
Thanks again !
Didn't The Smithereens do this 'Record Club' idea first? They're already on their third in the series.
Love Beck, thanks for the post, Willard. :)
Wasn't aware of that. I know they covered Meet The Beatles and Tommy, but those were sold in stores, right? Or are you referring to other projects?
Hilarious concept. You've gotta love the guy. My vote for #3 would either be the Rolling Stones "Beggar's Banquet", or the Monkees' soundtrack to "Head". Are you listening, Beck?
Yes, those two, plus 'Beatle B-Sides.' I was being slightly facetious, sorry (also sad, because I don't like what The Smithereens have become.)
Thanks again for all the great posts. :)
Gotcha. Thanks, didn't know about that one.
Apparently Wilco and Beck doing Skip Spence's OAR has already been done as well.
Regards/
really enjoyed this. thanks!
i was dubious at first, but now think this is a great idea… love what was done to "european son"… this could be a great series… would like to see them do maybe dylan's "highway 61 revisited"… or can you imagine if elliott smith was still alive and participating? i bet he would have done nico's "the marble index" THAT would have been interesting. would like to see them cover marianne faithfull's "broken english" as well.
R.Bum, sorry, I forgot to thank you for the link.
