Irresistible Impulse (2003)
Trailblazing Jazz Punk 4CD Box Set
One of the great, totally manic, jazz-punk experiments of all time. James Chance, a.k.a. James White, invigorated the late 70s NYC downtown scene with a frantic, free blowing jazz/funk attack that, even today, still has balls to spare. From The All Music Guide… “Armed with an alto sax and a disjointed funk band, Chance combined a disco beat, Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time, James Brown’s funk, and Stooges-era Iggy Pop theatrics that few have ever come close to matching. Irresistible Impulse is an amazing 49-song box set covering Chance’s entire career. It includes four of his full-length albums, three on the Ze label (Buy, Off White, and Flaming Demonics) and his 1982 release on Chris Stein’s Animal Records, Sax Maniac. James Chance is definitely an acquired taste, but make no mistake, this set of danceable sleaze will leave its mark on the novice & have the ardent fan frothing.” Amazon‘s got it.

Whoa! Why have a I never heard of this guy? And I even consider myself to have at least a passing knowledge of the No Wave movement. Leave it to you, Willard, to further expand my musical horizons.
Thank you once again!

Awesome share! I'm familiar with Off White but I'd never heard the others. Many thanks Willard.

James White is an original. I love his stuff and have been looking for this collection to augment all the LPs I have. Thanks for having such a wonderful and cutting-edge blog!
As the wise poet Lee Ving once sang: “New York’s alright… If you like saxophones.”
HA!
Wow…Unlike anything I’ve heard before – with a touch of George Clinton in there, too, as well as the other influences you mention.
At times it sounds as if it’s going to collapse into chaos, but it’s actually deceptively tight.
Many thanks for this goodness.
