Three guys (piano, bass & drums), one track (56 minutes) and an inexplicable title (Sex). Imagine a light, hypnotic jazz combo performing what sounds like the intro to The Doors’ “Riders On The Storm.” Except that it goes on for nearly an hour and evolves so slowly you might mistake it for a loop at first. That’s the concept behind Sex, the debut CD from The Necks, originally released in Australia and partially financed by the Australian Arts Council. At 56 minutes it should be monotonous, but somehow it’s not. In fact, The Necks have made a career on the concept, releasing over a dozen similarly themed constructs since this debut. It’s actually quite mesmerizing, and a perfect late night mood piece. Six years later, Private Records would re-release this CD in the US and The Necks would start to make a quiet name for themselves in minimalist circles. You can hear the entire track below, so pop it in the corner somewhere and open another window to surf elsewhere, and we’ll check back in on you in an hour. (Oh yeah… there’s a horn in there somewhere, too.) Amazon.
Sex (56:08)
BONUS:
Drive By (2003)
Many thanks to alanproj for offering up The Necks’ 2003 CD, Drive By. Another 60 minute hypno track that the All Music Guide calls “a remarkable, resoundingly brilliant album” in their 4-1/2 star review.

Hi. Thanks for the nice comment on my blog A Closet of Curiosities (in the Arthur C. Clarke 2001 post). You have a great blog too and linked you on my blog.
Also, thanks for grabbing and posting the King Crimson MP3s that once were on their website. I wasn't aware that they were doing this until I read about it here. I'll be paying a visit to their website very soon. Best wishes to you.
Many thanks Grey, you've got a cool blog full of oddities. Thanks for commenting.
This is AMAZING!! I've listened to it all afternoon.
Do you have any more from the Necks?
Thank you thankyou !!!!
Hy there.

Many thanks alan.
I've never heard this one.
We'll add it to the post right away.
Many thanks again.
Thanks for introducing the Necks to me, great track!
More remarkable music — currently playing as I enter this — that I never knew existed.
Great stuff! Thanks for turning me on…

Hey people, you can buy CDs direct from http://www.thenecks.com – discs dispatched from Oz take about 5-6 days to reach UK, strong GBP vs AUD makes prices highly competitive.
If you're new to their music, try Chemist (2006), or drive by (2004)
Great,great music.Thanks.
I enjoyed this

Superb…never heard of the band before…thanks to all involved
Thanks so much for thisw! This is great stuff! I am ashamed that I have missed this band until your terrific blog! Does anyone have a copy of "Aether"? Again Willard for all of your hard work on this great blog!
Many thanks for the kind words. Thanks for ALL the comments.
Thanks again, Willard. I need a long trancey album about now. Christmas & retail will make even a monk run amok.
Fantastic. I had no idea and now, well, now I do. Listened to both back to back and am enjoying the resulting headspace I have drifted into. Thank you for these!
I can’t believe how cool this is! Thanks.
provided some vital chill-out today as alternate hold music while waiting on a phone call to govt’ bureaucracy… whose actual hold music was random atmospheric jazz that kept wandering below and then popping back out of the phone’s minimum volume threshold, which blended rather well. Great rainy night urban wandeing stuff. Haven;t head the second one yet but looking forward, thanks.
Yeah, I’ve never tired of this album and that surprises me. I bought the original Australian release for a buck, used, just because it was an hour long track (I’ll risk a buck on that any day.) It somehow always hits the spot.
Oh this is great – Thanks! Perfect working music this morning ….
Would love a reup of this if you can. Also do you have “Piano Bass Drums”?
