Bash! (1984/2001)
Rockpile Anchor Man’s Catchy Debut
Billy Bremner was Rockpile’s all-too-often faceless gel. Nick Lowe’s & Dave Edmunds‘ short-lived 70s union produced only one album before splitting, though Rockpile acted as the backing band for numerous solo sessions for the two leaders. Bremner never took advantage of that relationship, going it alone on his debut solo LP, Bash! Vocally and compositionally, Bremner often sounds like a morphed version of both Nick & Dave, emulating Edmunds‘ twangy roots rock with ease while feeling right at home with Lowe’s style of catchy backbeat pop. He may not be as charismatic as his more famous bandmates, but his unpretentious, toe-tapping 4/4 rock is first-rate and mighty likable. Bash! was ably produced (and mostly co-written) by Will Birch (The Records, Kursaal Flyers). Rockpile drummer Terry Williams is also aboard. A Good Week’s Work, Billy’s second solo outing, was issued 15 years later, get it (and is HERE). Bash is available (and worth getting) at Amazon, HERE (as is 2006′s No Ifs, Buts, Maybes, HERE and 2012′s Rock Files, HERE).

“Musclebound” (1981/1984)
Long Lost B-Side To “Shatterproof”
The CD version of Bash features bonus track additions of the many 45s and b-sides Billy released in the early 80s. I used to collect them and noticed that one track, “Musclebound,” from the 12″ “Shatterproof” EP, was left out for some reason. So… here you go. For the curious, here’s the breakdown, in order of the pictured sleeves; “Shatterproof” b/w “Look At That Car”/”Musclebound,” “Loud Music In Cars” b/w “The Price Is Right,” “Meek Power” b/w “Yes Please!,” ”Laughter Turns To Tears” b/w “Tired And Emotional (And Probably Drunk)” & “When Love Goes To Sleep” b/w “Fire In My Pocket.”

Oh No! Deeper and deeper in debt to you every day…
I've been a longtime fan of Rockpile ("Seconds of Pleasure" was among the first 10 records I bought). I still have the worn-out vinyl, and I prefer to listen to it over the "upgrade" CD is bought to replace it. Some records NEED a little crackle and pop to sound right…
I has no idea that Bremner did solo work. Now I'm going to have to go to the music store to find "No Ifs, Buts, Maybes". Thanks yet again for furthering my musical education.

Great to see Billy's work getting a mention here. It was a joy to work with Bill, writing the songs that appeared on Bash, and watching him play amazing guitar in the studio. Thanks for posting 'The Perfect Crime'. Will
My… thanks for commenting.
I`m guessing this is the same Billy Bremner who was in the Neil Innes band Fatso, and guitarist on the Rutles albums
Great, lost the album years back, unsung hero, last saw Terry Williams at Mickey Gee`s funeral almost a year ago

Um, I was gonna add somethinglike "great post" then I saw you had a fantastic comment from Will Birch and I realized whatever I could say would be a bit anti-cliamctic after that.
Thanks Willard, thanks Billy, thanks Will.
Kinda stymied me, too. Thanks for all the comments.
I had 'Loud Music in cars' on 45 rpm & played it a lot! Thanks for this neat album.
I did, too. Still have it. First thing I ever bought from the guy. Played the shit out of it.
nice, cant wait to listen.
thank you for sharing the music!!

The man Bremner was always much underrated IMO & did some fine stuff both in Rockpile and solo, as witness here. All that & he still found time to captain the Leeds United soccer team!
Thanks for this — don’t think I had all of these b-sides. Bash was always one of my favorite Rockpile-related releases, along with Carlene Carter’s Musical Shapes and side 1 of Mickey Jupp’s Juppanese. Great stuff!
Nice to see BASH! getting another run up the flagpole. When I worked at Geffen’s A&R back in the 8Ts, I submitted Billy’s When These Shoes Were New to Donna Summer for her subsequent elpee, feeling the vibe and sentiment (and key) was right up her alley. She liked it so much, she called and thanked me twice for cluing her in. Always curious if she ever got around to giving the tune a bash, so to speak.
Very interesting, thanks. Might have provided BB with some welcomed royalties, too.
I saw Rockpile live many times & always thought Bremner should have received more acclaim — Loud Music in Cars indeed
Thanks for this. Fantastic
Very nice indeed. thanks…as always
Loud Music In Cars I bought as a 45 & consequently included it on more than a few ‘best of’ cassette collections. Thanks for the extras!
Williard! Could you re-up these links? Thanks my good man!
