VARIOUS ARTISTS Sing Hollies In Reverse (1995)

Really… A Good Tribute Album!

Tribute albums are, by nature, hit and miss affairs. Rarely are all the bands well-chosen and some even have a hard time successfully deciding whether to be true to the original or to give it their own spin. More often than not, it’s just the sheer variety of the artists involved that can undermine any collection’s cohesiveness. Which is why this tribute to the under-appreciated Hollies is such a gem. Sing Hollies In Reverse features 21 contributions from some of indie pop’s finest, including Mitch Easter, Wondermints, Tommy Keene, E & Jon Brion, tackling a largely forgotten catalog of Beatley pop and lite psychedelia that hasn’t been bled dry by oldies stations and advertising agencies (yet). The Posies’ “King Midas In Reverse” is reverently rich in pop shimmer while Material Issue’s “Bus Stop” is given a 60s garage treatment. The Loud Family plays “Look Through Any Window” as a psych dirge (until near the end) while “Pay You Back With Interest” could well be Mitch Easter’s finest recording. There are plenty of other nice surprises along the way to discovering some great new pop artists and re-discovering some great old pop songs. A tribute album you’ll listen to all of… for a change. A mere $3 to $6 at Amazon (HERE) and worth the investment. If you’ve got a taste for the real thing, visit a Wormhole, HERE.

Thank you very much for this. I just discovered your blog and am very impressed with the variety.
I'm very surprised that no one has left a comment for this album. I mean, it's The Hollies covered by some of the best powerpop bands of the day.
I've downloaded some others so I'll just thank you for them here.

I don't think that I ever even paid attention to this record because of it being a tribute album but I liked the samples, gave it a try and I like it! I should have looked more closely at the bands. It's one of the best tribute records I've heard. Now I'm going to check out the Hollies collection. I only have a single disc hits and want to hear more. So thanks alot for both.

Best tribute album ever. You know why? These songs are indestructible. Even the worst of these cover is no worse than the original version, and some, like "After the Fox" are even better. Good call here.

Thanks. Loud Family alone is worth the d/l w/the late great Scott Miller.
