PAUL McCARTNEY & FRIENDS Live At The White House The Gershwin Award Concert, June 2, 2010

Live At The White House
The Gershwin Award Concert, June 2, 2010

PBS’s Gershwin Award Concert broadcast last night was a fun evening celebrating the music of Paul McCartney. Even The Jonas Brothers sounded good, infusing “Drive My Car” with a youthful, teenage exuberance it hasn’t heard in years. Emmylou and Corrine Bailey Rae were both stand outs and there were even a few poignant moments, including McCartney & Stevie Wonder singing “Ebony & Ivory” and Paul serenading the First Lady with “Michelle.” One thing you won’t hear is McCartney’s comic dig at the previous administration, After the last eight years, it’s great to have a president who knows what a library is,” which was edited out by PBS… of all places. Most of McCartney’s selections, however, were of the expected chestnut variety, and while his voice has struggled to maintain in recent years, Paulie delivers here like the ultimate pro he is. Despite helping to change the world in the most positive of ways – over 46 years ago – this was McCartney’s debut at The White House.
