PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS The Complete 1979 Glasgow Concert

The Complete 1979 Glasgow Concert
Outstanding Soundboard Show

Recorded by McCartney himself for a possible Wings live album, this December 17, 1979 Glasgow concert is one of the better live Wings sets you’ll find. The show has been previously immortalized by bootleggers, best known as the Vigotone boot, Last Flight. Outstanding sound and a fun listen, with some offbeat selections (“Every Night,” “Hot As Sun,” “Wonderful Christmastime”) from Wings final tour in support of Back To The Egg. McCartney’s pot bust in Japan would put an end to Wings as a touring band. Most PMW fans already have this one, but here it is for those that don’t.

Thanks for this. Sounds great – much better than my old cdr @128. I saw Laurence Juber at a club in Milwaukee last year and he said he's just waiting for the call…

Did he say that with a straight face? (No disrespect to the guy, of course). McCartney rarely calls anybody back.

Paul McCartney and Wings last tour in the UK was indeed recorded during November and December of 1979. Wings performances and rehearsal’s were recorded on color video and soundboard by McCartney until their last December 29, 1979 concert for the People of Kampuchea benefit which saw the release of a live LP and video by the same title in 1981.

Still, Wings live in Glasgow is the only full concert that has materialized so far from that last 1979 UK tour. McCartney stated in Musician Magazine (1984) that “his bass playing was bad” and the band was not playing well at all at that time. Still, it is interesting to note that Wings went ahead and filmed/video taped their rehearsals for Japanese tv and would have toured Japan and then Europe and the US in the Spring and Summer of 1979 until McCartney was busted for illegal possession of Marihuana by Japanese customs officials in January of 1980.

The Glasgow concert is as McCartney stated about the band at the time; an uninspired band running through songs without focus. Great songs like Maybe Am amazed, Band on the Run, I’ve had enough, Old Siam Sir and Coming up sound rehearsed but tired and the soundboard mixing sounded flat. It could have been the mixing but then we can also compare the December 17th Glasgow performance with the December 29, Kampuchea concert LP and “coming up” EP from 1980 and realize that those performances were much tighter and better than the previous weeks performance.

There are a few token songs that stand out from the Glasgow concert; Every night, Cook of the House (Linda), Go Now, Twenty Flight Rock and Mull of Kityre.

We can understand why McCartney did not release this recording but hopefully will release the complete December 29, 1979 concert which was indeed the 1970s swan song for Paul McCartney and Wings.

There is also all those Wings versions of Ebony & Ivory, Ballroom Dancing, Bad Boy, Take it away and so many other studio recordings from 1980-1981 still unreleased.

That´s the problem sometimes of the guy who is his own boss. There is no one to tell him: Hey, it´s good enough, much better than many things we´ve put out, so we are releasing it, That´s final!

For me it is often the main reason for getting some of the archive collection itens, which have been added with some of these tracks. Tired performances or not, I just love his voice circa 79. Don´t you?

    Thanks!
