RICHARD THOMPSON Live At The BBC (Advance Listen)

The great Richard Thompson has a new, 4CD box (3CD+1DVD) coming out at the end of this month. Live At The BBC gathers together mostly unreleased BBC archive material for the first time, along with new interviews with both RIchard & Linda and even a few Thompson originals that have never been released (“Dragging The River,” 1973, “Modern Woman,” 1982, “Kidzz,” 2003 & “Time’s Gonna Break You,” 2009). 80 tracks in all. Access the player below to hear two tracks from the album, “Wall of Death,” from 2001 and “I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight,” from 1974. Note: The player says that not all regions can access this music, but it played fine for me. Go to Amazon to pre-order.

Video Bonus
Here’s a new, 2011 video of Richard performing “When The Spell Is Broken,” for a new iPad app (On The Music Path) where RT teaches his guitar technique for a new generation of fans. A cool performance, especially if you want to learn how to play the tune.

“Henry The Human Fly” was first and is still his best album (my opinion, anyway). It was out of print for a long time. Not sure what the current status is.

For me, Thompson is one of the few artists that has actually gotten better with age. I’m constantly amazed at the quality of his songwriting and ideas. I like a lot of his later stuff as much as the older.

No argument here. Just wanted to shout out about “Henry”. It’s special.
