O Solo Drumbo (1998)
Hippest Drummer On Earth
He was Captain Beefheart’s drummer and continues to this day in the functioning Magic Band. He’s John French, a.k.a. Drumbo, and there’s not a whole lot one can say to explain him. Either you know his rumbling, tribal style or you don’t. French’s appeal is curious. He tunes his drums differently, or something, but that can’t be the only reason. He’s been in so many great side projects… Mallard, Crazy Backwards Alphabet and French Frith Kaiser & Thompson, to name a few. This 1998 solo release is produced by guitarist/pal Henry Kaiser. But be warned… O Solo Drumbo is just drums, just as the title suggests. No instrumentation whatsoever. It works because there aren’t a lot of guys who have the right to pull off a “cover” of “The Thousandth And Tenth Day Of The Human Totem Pole.” Besides, connoisseurs will silently fill in all the missing parts, anyway. Be prepared to fill in a lot of blanks, however, as there are 65 minutes of only magic drums here. A pricey delicacy at Amazon.

I’m sensing a John French fan.
I’m reading back through the Blog to see the things that I’ve missed and this post was one of them. I’ve never heard this album and didn’t know it existed. Having only recently discovered Zappa and Beefheart in the last couple of years, I’ll count this album as being part of the catching up process.
Thanks.
