Just Roll Tape: April 26, 1968 (2007)
Stills’ First Takes
You probably know the story. Crosby, Stills & Nash didn’t exist yet and Stephen, who had just split from Buffalo Springfield, was at a recording session with Judy Collins when he peeled off $200 and told the engineer to “just roll tape.” The result is a set of demos that Stills would eventually turn into classics via CS&N, CSN&Y, Manassas and his solo work. Take note of the two “Judy” songs Stills penned for his then-girlfriend, Collins. “Helplessly Hoping,” written before CS&N, shows how fully developed Stills’ work had become. The sound quality is good, though surprisingly primitive given today’s remastering technology (as this was recorded in a studio). Still… it’s Stills in all his youthful glory. The “Treetop Flyer” demo is from a later session.

I was once asked, if you were on a desert island and could only have the music of one group who would it be…. my choice after some thought was CSN&Y. thanks for this I did not even know it was out there, and it is already one of my favorites.

Thanks for the CSNY related material you've put on your website. Here's a consideration for a future posting: CSNY Session Selections/1969 Demos. These are alternate studio recordings from their self titled album. I haven't been able to locate this music. Otherwise, thanks for the oppurtunity for the various types of music here (I've enjoyed the Lifehouse material – amazing). The Harry Nilsson website is great too. I would never have known about Harry otherwise.
His demo of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" is so beautiful, so absolutely beautiful in the truest sense of the word. My God how did so much talent pour into one human being. I could listen to just that track for months on end without ever listening to any of the others and be utterly satisfied.
