JEFF SIMMONS Naked Angels (1969)

Naked Angels (1969)
Released On Zappa’s Straight Label

And you thought Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up was obscure. Before briefly becoming the bassist for The Mothers of Invention, Jeff Simmons co-wrote and recorded the soundtrack for Naked Angels, a low budget 1969 Roger Corman-produced biker gang movie, later released on Frank Zappa’s Straight label. The music, a frenzy of largely instrumental fuzz guitar jamming and a touch of psychedelicized surf rock, fills the bill for a cheap exploitation flick, even while boasting a cross-section of various styles and technique. “Bar Dream” even employs some of FZ’s patented tape manipulation. Simmons’ legend was cemented when Frank produced and performed on Jeff’s 1970 LP, Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up. He was probably best known for bailing out of a starring role in (and being replaced by Ringo Starr’s chauffeur just prior to filming) Zappa’s 200 Motels. Jeff & Frank would later team up for a few FZ albums in the early 70s… but Simmons took another 35 years to release his third album, Blue Universe. Naked @ Amazon.

I loves me some fuzz guitar. Thanks Willard!
P.S. Do you remember the great "Zapped" lp that Warner Bros. released for a buck way back when? That's where I first heard Jeff. What a great compilation album. I've downloaded it since, but would love a primo vinyl copy.

He was the guy who wanted to "quit the comedy group and get heavy." right?

Yep. As portrayed by Ringo's chauffeur. Apparently, Jeff did exactly that. What's curious is that, even though it threw Frank's big budget movie in disarray, FZ apparently didn't hold a gurdge against Simmons, who was back working with Frank on Roxy And Elsewhere a few years later.

PJ, yeah, I bought the Zapped back in the day, along with a couple of the $2 double albums. I can't remember… did they charge postage on top of that, or not? Though I had lost the Zapped over the years, I ended with with another one, a different version with the collage cover.

    Thanks for commenting.

As I dimly recall, it was a flat fee of 2 bucks for the double lp's (Zapped was the only one going for one Samolean). Sadly, the only Loss Leader I have left is the triple-lp box set of Merrie Melodies which of course went for 3 bangers. Priceless.

Those were the days, huh? Wait… what am I talking about? Everything's instant and free now. I guess THESE are the days.

Yeah. These are the days. But I still have a vaultful of vinyl to remind myself what music feels like. I managed to download the new Church (Aussie band) album a couple of days ago and it's not even been released yet. The problem is, finding the time to listen to all this stuff. Who'd have time to sit through a double album loss-leader sampler today?

While we're on the subject of 200 Motels, I really do rate this as the worst movie I've ever had to sit through. It's almost unendurably bad. How could it go so very wrong?

They were rank amateurs. Rank being the operative word. I kind of enjoy it these days, however, just to see how young and stupid everybody was back in the day, and for the few performance numbers. But, you’re right… it IS bad.

    Greetings.
Thank You Very Much For JEFF SIMMONS 'Naked Angels Soundtrack'.
Do you happen to have the reissue of JEFF SIMMONS 'Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up' with the two bonus tracks ("Bucket Of Blues" 2:40 and "Lucille HMMMU" 8:23)?
Or, if not the entire thing, just the two bonus tracks?
    Best Regards,
    Sam

I just dug out my LP of Killer and the sleeve lists ten separate Loss Leader double albums. All for only $2 each postage paid. That was in 1974. I then did a Google search and came up with this :

This one I had in my collection, though I don’t think I spun it more then a couple times. The cover is priceless.
