MOJO Presents x 10 – The MOJO Machines Turns You On, Volumes 1-10 (1997-1999)

MOJO‘s first moves into the free CD giveaway market were these 10 quarterly (sorta) offerings, basically your standard compilations of recent major label releases – a time-honored way for magazines to get free music out of record companies. But, after these first 10, all called The MOJO Machine Turns You On (the first five being numbered), the magazine changed course and took a more editorially based approach to their free discs, developing ongoing themes and tailoring their comps to editorial content – instead of just what the labels were pushing. These were extremely hard to find, as MOJO‘s own website only mentions 4 of these CDs. We had some ready to go, and were about to appeal for the others, but our pal Angelo over at Power Pop Criminals posted all 10 of these last year. And, since PPC’s downloads are always top-notch (artwork, too), we decided to use Angelo’s in order to complete our little shrine to MOJO over here… with our sincere thanks. So, if your dreams have been answered with these discs, and you want to share some love, follow the link to Power Pop Criminals and give them our regards (and check out the mountains of other cool stuff there). Thanks, Angelo.

We’ve got over 100 MOJO‘s in the archives – except for the ones we’re posting next week, which will wrap up our Sunday MOJO posts. We’ll throw up a complete list then, too, just to see if we’re missing anything. Follow the links. All the MOJO‘s are listed near the bottom right of the blog.

I was just having a laugh with a fellow ‘muso’ about how predictable many of these MOJO selections are… but still: this is a valuable and amazing archive of MOJO samplers you’ve put together, Willard, and it will come in handy for many people… good on ya and thank you. ;)

By nature, I’m not big on comps. Having them, yes… listening to them like an album, no. Same with the MOJO’s. But… instead of them sitting on my shelf gathering disinterest (about a third of mine were still sealed for years) at least now their getting heard. Since actually digging into them for these posts, I’ve discovered a lot of cool stuff over the years. And I think I understand why I like them better now. In the years before doing my listening on the computer, I would rarely dig out a comp CD to listen to it start to finish. Happens, but not a lot. But, having this stuff on the computer, it’s more about the individual songs than the compilations. It’s kind of like one big bizarre eclectic collection to me now, instead of individual discs – so it’s easy to embrace some and leave other stuff behind. As for THESE 10 discs, well… they’re just label comps to me. I’ll dig a few tracks out and leave the rest be. But you’re right… we’ve kinda discussed it here before. MOJO‘s monthly grind to make these compilations has taken a toll on creativity, which is why most folks still swear by the earlier comps that came right after these 10. But… at the end of the day, it’s always nice to have a little free surprise at the end of the month.

Outstanding find! Thank you so much for taking this all the way home.
To the best of my knowledge, I’m missing only two Mojo discs:
January 2006’s The New American Songbook (aka Born in the USA Vol 2)
August 2007’s In Search of Syd
The thought that I might complete the project on Sunday makes me very happy!

Those are, indeed, two of the 4 (or 5, if we get the newest in time) that we’re posting next week. You’ll have to find a new obsession next Monday.
