Live At The Knitting Factory
Volumes 1-5
(1989-91)
Let’s Get Difficult

Back when I was into the downtown/New York/avant rock scene pretty heavy, this box set of live recordings, made at the legendary home of alternate wavelengths, The Knitting Factory, was a go-to collection for me. There’s way too much here to get into any detailed analysis. Besides, where to even begin to explain this rule-breaking blend of rock, jazz, avantgarde, atmospherics is a challenge in itself. Genre fans will know what to expect by some of the names attached, including Negativland, Gary Lucas (The Magic Band), Sonny Sharrock, the great Joey Baron, Doctor Nerve, Don Byron, Last Exit, Spanish Fly, X-Legged Sally, Universal Congress Of… and many others. Unless I’m mistaken, Volumes One & Two were later reissued with covers more like Volumes 3-5. Don’t know if the original box is still around anywhere, but you can get individual discs from Amazon by clicking the album covers. Listen to Doctor Nerve’s “Nothing You Can Do Hurt Me,” with trumpet great, Dave Douglas.

    Welcome Back Captain –
Glad to see that The Boat has resurfaced – and is sharing some of the best of the downtown New York City's best. Have spent many an hour in/at The Knitting Factory – and appreciate you sharing these discs – hopefully this will turn some of your reader onto some great musics.
    Thanks – as always.
