JIMI HENDRIX Winterland (2011) 5-CD Sony Box Set

It appears that Sony and the Hendrix Estate, is behind the upcoming 4CD release, Winterland. According to reports, the box set, due to be released September 13, is a distillation of Hendrix’s three-day stand at San Francisco’s Winterland in October, 1968. Of course… this music is already available (in some places) as The Winterland Reels, six CDs worth of raw unedited live tapes. So, take your pick. Amazon is also giving away an exclusive 5th disc of unreleased live material from a February 1968 Winterland show when you buy it from them (5 discs somewhat reasonably priced at $40.99 – if you lock in the price). There’s also a single disc version more akin to the old Ryko Live At Winterland from the late 80s. Find all our Hendrix HERE. For the new box, click HERE.

Thanks for the info. I had thought it had something to do with the ownership of the tapes. Are there any other titles being bandied about?

Amazon’s Disc 5 is still available from Dagger Records, the estates “bootleg ” label.

I have to assume that the guest appearances of Virgil Gonzalves (flute) & Herbie Rich (organ) have been removed from these discs as they were on the earlier official releases of the Winterland Oct. concerts. (?) If so, for shame!

I wouldn’t assume that the songs on earlier issues are off limits.

Maybe not the songs themselves, just these guest appearances! For instance, the earlier official release (or maybe it was the third-cd bonus disc from Live At Winterland?) featured the Are You Experienced (Oct. 11, 1968, early show) that had Virgil Gonzalves sitting in on flute. However, the track was edited down and Virgil’s fluting was removed from the song completely–i suspect due to royalties payments(?)–this was Alan Douglas’s doing–i hope Sony corrects this, but i doubt it, if this rendition is even included in the boxset.
Herbie Rich sat in on organ for Lover Man, Hey Joe, Fire and Foxy Lady on the Oct. 11, late show. It will be interesting to see if any of these songs made the cut, and if they included the organ on them!
Oh well, people can always hear the uncut, raw versions right here! –dandor
