Bonus Tracks (2011)
The Alternate ELO! 5 Hours, 81 Tracks.
Here’s one last blast of essential ELO. Give some love to Reggie, over at Music My Owner Listens To [And Other Musings], for providing yet another cool post for us all. This is a gathering of all the official bonus tracks from various Electric Light Orchestra CD reissues. Over 5 hours of material, providing an all new glimpse into an alternate ELO universe. Most of this music comes from the 2006/2007 Japanese remasters, but there’s also plenty of unreleased stuff found on the multi-disc, 30th Anniversary “First Light Series” – The Electric Light Orchestra (a.k.a. No Answer in the USA) and ELO 2. We’ve weeded out the dupes and added in five ELO tunes from the Xanadu soundtrack you couldn’t bring yourself to buy. Yes… that’s Olivia Newton-John singing the Jeff Lynne-penned title track. And… if you act before midnight tonight, you get a Bonus Tracks bonus. Ten previously unreleased recordings from the excellent 2000 ELO box set, Flashback – including a new version of “Xanadu” featuring Jeff Lynne singing lead. There are other oddities, too. I lived with this over the weekend and it’s a great listen and collection. Click the covers for links to Amazon. Thanks for the shares, Reggie.

Man, you don’t realize how long I’ve been looking for The First Light Series of the first two ELO forever. Thank you so much.
This is awesome! Many thanks Captain!
Wow! What a generous bounty of ELO goodness! Thank you very much! But (and you might kill me for this), there is yet another song not accounted for here, namely “Time After Time”, which was the cassette bonus track from “Secret Messages” and was also on the 12-inch vinyl single version of “Rock And Roll Is King”. That’s the only omission I know of, so that ain’t bad!
Wasn’t meaning that as a backhanded compliment, just didn’t know whether or not you knew about that one. But seriously, this is awesome. The ELO portion of the “Xanadu” soundtrack is on here, even “Drum Dreams” (the B-side of “I’m Alive”) is on this! Used to have the 45, haven’t heard it in 25-30 years, so this will be a real treat to hear again!
Once again, hearty thanks to you and to Reggie for your generosity!
Well, here’s the deal. The original idea was to just gather together all the officially released bonus tracks from the 2006/2007 Japanese CD re-issues. Then, while researching, we started finding other tracks (like the extra Xanadu stuff – since there’s no “official” CD bonus tracks). We considered going whole hog and gathering everything we could find (straglers like “Time After Time,” and others), but there are just way too many rarities and b-sides that haven’t made it to disc yet. Visit the Jeff Lynne Song Database and you’ll see a handful of other missing single b-sides. Fact is, there’s just too much to get without spending weeks on it – and not even being sure of getting it all. So… we settled for the 5+ hours of CD stuff (with just a couple of extras). Thanks for commenting.
This site is like a classorom, except I don’t hate it. lol
Thanks for all the hard work, much appreciated! Amazing how prolific they were.
I bailed on ELO after the Discovery album, so I’m curious to see if I missed anything.
You can also hear a cool later-day track via the streaming player.
I just dl’d “Time After Time” from iTunes and converted it to mp3 (320kbps/44,100, stereo, of course! :) ) I’ll be more than happy to add this to the collection.
You’re welcomed to include a link in comments. But, instead of converting it UP to 320, just use the original iTunes file. That way there’s no conversion. Many thanks.
Willard sez:

To which I sez:
NOW he tells me! :D
furrball
Oh wow – what a goldmine! Thanks for the post, W!
Furrball. It’s no big deal, but converting to 320 from a lower bit rate is not the same as an original 320 file. But, I’m sure very few can tell the difference. So if anyone wants to pester you for an “original, I’ll leave that up to you guys.
Just grabbed it. MANY thanks.
Now that I think of it, though… aren’t iTunes files MP4s?
If that’s the case, we would have needed an Mp3 for most folks anyway.
Thanks.
when i was a wee pup, i went to see elo at madison square garden. it was when they had the huge flying saucer motif (the “out of the blue” tour)
during “mr blue sky” the audio died and jeff lynne and co didnt realize it for about 30 seconds and kept playing.
a couple of months later, i saw the queen jazz tour when the naked chicks rode around stage on bikes.
it was at that point i decided that queen kicks elo’s ass
So it all comes down to naked chicks on bikes, eh? Thanks Nazz.
What a collection, amazing! Thanks again, Willard!
Wonderful Post! Great to get all these tracks together. Much thanks for putting this together and sharing it.
I had no clue there was such a wealth of outtakes and alt. versions of ELO stuff.
This looks just incredible! I’m esp. eager to hear the first and second album material;
that early stage, when they were throwing any- and everything at the studio wall, is
incredible (not that the later music wasn’t).
I’ve read that there was some Roy Wood involvement on the ELO II recordings, and
that seems credible. Imagine if he and Lynne had been able to find a way to continue
working together …
This is great! Many thanks!
Jeff got so commercial in later years. It’s hard to imagine Wood fitting in with it all. Or… Lynn even considering some of the solo stuff Wood did. But when they were together, you’re right… man, the ideas were flying.
willard- it ALWAYS comes down to naked chicks on bikes- but you knew that already!!!!!
Willard n Reggie, Many Thanks 4 the ELO posts. Excellent stuff here! I always felt ‘Time’ was an under-appreciated classic. Loved the b side ‘When Time Stood Still’. I do cringe at some of Discovery, though. Cheers! Peace.
I remember Reggie saying… “I bet Ian’ll like this.”
I said, “I.O.C. Ian?”
Reggie said, “Yeah, Ian of Cornwall.”
Then I said, “What make’s you think Ian’ll like it?”
And Reggie said, rather matter-of-factly, “‘Cause he’s from Cornwall.”
“Oh yeah,” I thought to myself, “…Cornwall.”
LMFAO as they now say. Sorry, I’m not from Cornwall, I just live here. I’m from the town with the world’s longest pleasure pier. I feel like a fraud now. Cheers! Peace.
Nonsense.
YOU, my friend, are Ian… of Cornwall, and don’t apologize for it.
Besides, if you aren’t it kind of blows a hole in the whole “liking ELO and being from Cornwall” theory.
Cheers
LOL
The internet is so great at fixing a hole in your collection and you, Willard, are the master fixer upper! Love Olivia Neutron-Bomb on the cover shot too.
I remember Reggie saying… “I bet Johnny’ll like this.”
I said, “Johnny Kinkdom?”
Reggie said, “Ye…
Sorry… did that routine already.
Just plain MASSIVE. I own most of this, but to take the time to compile & share your hard work with us is amazing. Most ELO fans are already proven loyal & grabed the reissues off Amazon on their street date.
Again, this is a MASSIVE treat, thank you so much to those that shared.
Wow—seriously great to see this all together. Thanks very much, both of you.
What is the “First Light” series?
Google is your friend.
Thanks – amazing share!
Thanks again for posting these tracks. Unfortunately the mediafire link on the 1st download is out of commission. Would you be able to re-up? Thanks mucho!
New link. Thanks.
Is there a new link for this? I’d love to get this.

Exelente material. Gracias
Gracias por comentar.
The last track on cd 1 is a combination of “10538 Overture” and (after a pause) “Whisper In The Night” . Does anyone know where the version of “Whisper In The Night” comes from?
And how about the Japanese bonus tracks on the 3 recent cd’s. Is there a way to get them outside Japan? I’ve search iTunes, but no luck.
