BRINSLEY SCHWARZ The New Favorites Of… Brinsley Schwarz (1974)

The New Favorites Of… Brinsley Schwarz (1974)
The End… Or The Beginning?

The last album from Brinsley Schwarz might also be their best, and should be in any 70s UK pop collection that begins with Nick Lowe’s work on Stiff Records. Because, it’s on this album that Lowe comes of age, redirecting the band away from their pub rock roots to deliver a more pronounced soul, rock & pop confection. It’s tempting to view this music as some sort of mutant cell divide, whose DNA (Lowe, Ian Gomm, The Rumour) would kickstart the pop wave about to overtake the UK in 1976 (quickly splintering from glam rock into power pop, punk and new wave). Not because this LP sounds like any of those movements, it doesn’t. Much of the music on New Favorites… is of the soulful rockin’ variety (a few tracks with tricked-out horns, even), but the dots aren’t hard to connect. Lowe is only a step and a smirk away from the So What? Pop he would begin to pioneer via The Tartan Horde HERE (as Terry Modern, singing about The Bay City Rollers) and, later, Stiff Records. “Trying To Live My Life Without You” could fit on any of Nick’s later solo LPs, “Now’s The Time” is a Beatles ’64 homage, while Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding” is one of the last century’s great pop/rock treasures. The bonus track, “Everybody,” might be from the last, unreleased Brinsley Schwarz album, It’s All Over Now (which Gomm is/was personally selling online, made from the master tapes). Amazon has it HERE.

(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding? (3:36)
Ever Since You’re Gone (4:07)
Ugly Things (2:49)
I Got The Real Thing (3:37)
The Look That’s In Your Eye Tonight (4:12)
Now’s The Time (2:07)
Small Town, Big City (4:29)
Trying To Live My Life Without You (3:24)
I Like You, I Don’t Love You (3:26)
Down In The Dive (4:56)
I’ve Cried My Last Tear (2:36) – Bonus Track
(It’s Gonna Be A) Bringdown (2:54) – Bonus Track
Everybody (3:00) – Bonus Track
There’s A Cloud In My Heart (3:05) – Bonus Track

It looks to me like all the bonus stuff on this is already released on the compilation of rare stuff called Hens’ Teeth. The title ( It’s Gonna be a ) Breakdown is called (It’s Gonna be a ) Bringdown . It’s nice to see the Brinsleys get posted and given credit for being the great band they were. Thanks and once again yours is a great sight. Phil Winans

Cool, thanks for the correction. Do you know anything about It’s All Over Now? I’ve seen the tracklist, but have never heard it. Wasn’t sure if the bonus of “Everybody” was the same or not.

      It’s All Over Now
      We Can Mess Around (Lowe)
      Cruel To Be Kind (Lowe/Gomm)
      As Lovers Do (Lowe)
I’ll Take Good Care Of You (Berns/Ragavoy)
Hey Baby (There Playing Our Song) (Holvay & Beisber)
Do The Cod (The Thirty Pounder) (Lowe/Andrews/Gomm/Rankin/Schwarz)
God Bless (Whoever Made You) (Lowe/Gomm)
      Everybody (T.Rowe)
      Private Number (T.Jones/W.Bell)

Somebody sold me a compilation (boot of some sort) called Surrender to the Rythm a few years back and it has some of the stuff on your list although in some cases they have altered titles.
    It’s on Tendolar label 058.
    Mess with Love
    Cruel to be Kind
    As Lovers do
    Take Good Care of You
    That’s Where we Belong
    Snorky
    God Bless Who Made You
    Everybody
    Private Number
    Tell me it’s Why
    It’s all Over Now
Save the Last Dance For Me
    Cruel to be Kind
    Love Goes on
    Try to Remember
    30 Pounder
    Hooked on Love
    It’s been so Long
Why do we hurt the Ones we Love?
I’m Gonna Make You Love me

According to credits 1 Thru 11 are the last studio lp released in 75 then deleated immediately. 12 thru 15 were live on the last tour and 16 thru 20 were live at the BBC 1973.Anyone who likes these people should also look for a boot cd called Unknown Numbers that contains BBC stuff from June 18,1971, May 4,1972, and APRIL 14, 1973. None of this appears on the two legal BBC things on The Brinsleys ( What’s so Funny and Cruel to be Kind). Keep the Great stuff coming. Phil Winans

Fantastic, thanks Phil. Still have it? I’m poking around but am having a hard time finding it online (there’s a legit best of with the same name). Though it is mentioned at AMG. Did anyone grab Gomm’s master tape version?

One of my all time favorite albums. The sleeper track on this one, IMO, is “The Ugly Things.”

Great tune. McCartney-esque, with that hint of “And I Love Her” in the guitar line. I think that song points in the direction Lowe’s was heading – casually traditional. Thanks JB.

Thanks! Love The Brinsleys, and all that followed (Lowe solo, Rockpile, Ian Gomm, The Rumour). I, too have often heard ABOUT the ‘lost’ album (It’s all over now), but have never heard it, and would love to be able to get it, or the boots that Phil mentioned (Surrender, Unknown Numbers), but have not been able to find these. Anyone have them to share?

The first few tracks of “It’s all over now” can be found/heard on youtube. Excellent songs they are. Ian Gomm was releasing some of this stuff via his website in the past year.

Many thanks for this – sounds stunning, and you can never have enough prime Nick Lowe. This is going to get as many plays as The Grays. Thanks again.

Sorry it took a while to get back. I’ll be glad to furnish you a copy of the Brinsley stuff I wrote you about. You’ll have to tell me what to do (I’m not a genius on computer!!). Also on the second one I wrote to you about (BBC stuff) I’ve never been able to get it to copy. It looks fine and plays fine (I take care of my stuff!!) but it won’t copy. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Phil

Indeed!Think my Hens Teeth is only at 192 anyway…am searching for the Beeb stuff tho!
I missed out on the pub scene by a cple of years, hitting London in 77. Did see Nick Lowe a lot back then. Used to have a wonderful Stiff promo life size cut out of him that had a battery operated hand that strummed the gtr :)

Cool. I would ask why you ever got rid of it, but I had a life size Alfred Hitchcock stand up (profile, of course) for about 20 years and just tossed it one day. But, a battery operated strumming hand? That might have stuck around 25 years.

Gone but not by choice…actually moved from Glasgow to London with 2 giant Costello’s and a Mr Lowe…but life and moving across the world to Australia via Am*dam meant that a lot of things got left behind/stolen/lost!
    Such is life!

Via Amsterdam? Well… now I’m wondering about, as Paul Harvey would say, “the rest of the story.” Admit it. You swapped Nick for a couple of lids, didn’t you?

Unfortunately Nick didn’t make it that far and I suspect that in those days he would have preferred to have been swapped for a couple of bottles of vodka!
One of these days I will have to tell the story of Jah Wobble, me and the night of the psychedelic koala pj case at The Paradiso!!!
