VARIOUS ARTISTS So Indie It Hurts (2008) & This Is How i Roc (2008)

Along with individual promotional tracks, Amazon also has a host of album length samplers that can be had for free. You’ll need to sign up with Amazon (and live in the land of the free) to access them directly. Individual tracks just require a click, full albums require use of the Amazon downloader. We’ve already done the dirty work and gathered these together for you here (check Comments), but you can click the album covers and get them yourself or find out more.

So Indie It Hurts (2008)
Free ROIR Downloads From Amazon

It’s a new era for record company promotion and the technology is bringing us downloads of free label samplers, like this one from ROIR, the famed cassette-only (and often hard to find) label from the punk era. This is a cool collection of some of ROIR’s more raucous offerings, including James Chance, The Dictators, Johnny Thunders and 8 more. Some of it is live and, like everything on the old ROIR label, the quality varies. But this time you can’t bitch about the price. This isn’t the only free sampler you can find at Amazon, either. There are others of varying interest that are just a click (well… 11 clicks) away from being yours. We’ve done the leg work so you can get it here.

BAD BRAINS - Big Takeover
THE STYRENES - Radial Arm Saws
DUB TRIO featuring MIKE PATTON - Not Alone
FLIPPER - Ha Ha Ha
THE DICKIES - Hideous
JOHNNY THUNDERS - King Of The Gypsies
JAMES CHANCE - Contort Yourself
BUSH TETRAS - Punch Drunk
MC5 - Skunk (Sonically Speaking)
MIRRORS - Another Nail In The Coffin
THE DICTATORS - Science Gone To Far

This Is How i Roc (2008)
More Guilt-Free Freebies

Another cool collection of free downloads, this one from Yep Roc Records, featuring Nick Lowe, Loudon Wainwright III, The Apples In Stereo and 8 other artists. This one has some great material. For me, the Robyn Hitchcock was an eye opener and Dave Alvin just sounds better every minute. While iTunes is dolling out a few meager single MP3s, Amazon.com is, as usual, doing it right and offering up free multi-artist comps, making it easy for you to sample what there is to hear out there and maybe discover a few things along the way. Act fast though, they’re not there forever.

THE APPLES IN STEREO - Can You Feel It?
RON SEXSMITH - Brandy Alexander
LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III - Motel Blues
LIAM FINN - Second Chance
NICK LOWE - The Club
BELL X1 - Eve, The Apple Of My Eye
DAVE ALVIN - Ashgrove
ROBYN HITCHCOCK & THE EGYPTIANS - Bad Case Of History
THE BASEBALL PROJECT - Pastime
SLOAN - Believe in Me
REVEREND HORTON HEAT - Callin‘ In Twisted

The music in this set is fascinating, and I especially like the apples in stereo cut. I have admired their sound for quite a while, and you will hear hints of apples in stereo on my song 'dark waters' and an older song on the blogsite called 'the Undertow' . they have an incredible feel for pop experimentation, and I have a few of their cd's. Just a word to push the apples and the envelopes they're pushing…Paul

    Hi Paul,
Funny, I had The Apples In Stereo uploaded for the streaming audio until, while listening, I fell in love with the Dave Alvin track. Guess I should include both, eh?
