In Color – The Unreleased Steve Albini Sessions (1997)
A Tale Of Two Versions
When Cheap Trick entered the studio with producer Steve Albini to record 1997′s Cheap Trick (Red Ant Records), the band decided – for whatever reason – to also re-record their 1977 pop rock classic, In Color… live in the studio. It’s been said the band wanted to update the original’s radio friendly sheen with a harder, meatier edge, Albini’s stock in trade. Whether that’s true, it’s certainly a fact that playing the material live for two decades before entering the studio with Albini had its benefits. The tapes, as good as they are, were never released. I saw these guys in a bar in Madison WI way before their first lp was released — I never would have guessed that they'd be successful, not to mention good. This is still their best lp.
I never understood why CT was so down on the Tom Werman produced original…it is one of my Top 10 albums of all time. nearly perfect.
Apparently they weren’t completely happy with the new version either, as it’s not officially released. Maybe they’re just hard to please.
I volunteered at my college radio station (SDSU 1977). They gave me a pile of records to review that no one else wanted to listen to. In it was Cheap Trick’s first. I raved about it.
As a result I got tickets to see them at the Starwood in Hollywood. They were amazing, and I still have my Rick NIelsen pick.
I’ve often thought about creating a list of most disappointing sophomore efforts, which would include Televisions “Adventure”, and The Clash’s “Give’em Enough Rope”.
I can’t begin to describe my disappointment of “In Color”. The songs were good but the production was lame. I understand why they Albini’d it. Which is definitely an improvement.
Listening to this makes me want to go out and buy some weed. Gleefully and guilt free.
Aw… you were going to anyway.
A re-up of these CT albums and The Essential, would be a treat.
