HARRY NILSSON Bonus Tracks (1967-1993) (2012 Edition)

Bonus Tracks (1967-1993) (2012)
A
Smorgasbord, Just Like His Albums

2012 Edition! It’s about time we gave Nilsson the ‘alternate universe’ treatment. 67 glorious outtakes, demos and hidden rarities… all the bonus tracks from Nilsson’s officially released CDs. We’ve finally reorganized these collections to include material issued in the last few years on Japanese imports – some from upgraded 2007 sources – along with a couple of odds and ends that shouldn’t be left out. The three sets boast some stunning, previously unreleased tunes (“Wasting My Time”), nifty alternate versions (“Gotta Get Up,” three years before Nilsson Schmilsson), foreign versions of “Without You” and obscure non-LP covers, like John Lennon’s “Isolation.” A Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night‘s outtakes come from the 1973 LP’s little known follow-up, 1988′s A Touch More Schmilsson In The Night (which is now incorporated into reissues of ALTOSITN). Harry also soundtracked a Gene Wilder composition – “Ain’t It Kind Of Wonderful” (from the brilliant World’s Greatest Lover) in the same ‘standards’ vein. There are also intimate Nilsson Sings Newman outtakes, piano demos for much of Nilsson Schmilsson and two tracks thought to be slated for Nilsson’s last, unreleased album. The overall quality is much improved and the collection seems complete (if not, let us know). So, if you got these 3 years ago, you’re advised to get ‘em again.

Once again, God bless Harry. Thanks to you, old pard, for a nice tuneup & overhaul of Harry. We’ll have to keep him overnight, but you can have him in the morning. Good luck.

Thanks Ducky. It’s gonna be a slow process, but we’ll be posting some different things to keep it all lively. Most of the behind the scenes crap (moving things around, making sure everything links up) is the time consumer. But… we’ve been adding posts – with no rhyme or reason – since 2007, so there are tons of things that need to be doubled up and re-posted with better graphics and bits. Some of that 2007 reissue material sounds wonderful. Heading back there now. All the best, buddy.

Cool. It’s a fun listen because a number of his albums were thematic (The Point, the orchestral album, Nilsson Sings Newman), so hearing his stuff in a different context is always interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks, W. “The Point” was the third album I ever owned (40 years ago) and I’ve loved Harry ever since. Happy New Year to you and your great blog!

The Point did it to a LOT of us in the 70s. It was so unique. Almost like a continuous piece of music sprinkled with a variety of themes. Of course, we didn’t think about structure and stuff back then, but I think it’s why The Point has stood the test of time. Have a good 2012.

Cool that this should be here at this time! I’ve just gotten into a Nilsson mood because:

I recently picked up “This Precious Time” by Barry McGuire [w/the Mama & Papas] (1965) and Richard Harris’ all-Jimmy Webb LP “The Yard Went On Forever” (1968) out of a dollar bin. On the lyric insert for the latter, the song “Water Mark” has an asterisk linking it to a note saying “Before Nilsson”. I assume that’s a play on, for instance, drawings that bear the legend “After (name of more famous artist).” But that’s as much as I can figure.

Any Harry apes out there with a more specific explanation about the note?

For whatever reason I never saw this comment. Curious note.

Thanks for the update. That would seem to suggest a cookie or refresh issue on your main computer, though, I’m not an expert on that sort of thing. If you’ve never dumped cookies before, you might google it and look into it. It will speed things up and get rid of some lingering oddball issues like this one.
