The Songs Of Leonard Cohen Covered (March 2012)
The March 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine carries with it this CD compilation based on Leonard Cohen’s debut LP, The Songs Of Leonard Cohen. I really can’t address the material, as I’ve never been a Cohen follower, so non-fans are on their own. Beck and some of his pals covered this same album a couple of years ago. There are some bonus tracks not associated with the original LP. The spaced “Last Year’s Man” was a standout for me, but it didn’t sound anything like Leonard Cohen (I think). Don’t forget the 118 other MOJO‘s in the archives.

Thanks!
And Lenny’s new one is surely a candidate for best album of new material by anyone over 76 years old ever. In fact, are there any competitors for the title? Do I hear over 70? Over 65 (which Dylan was when he released Modern Times)?
Yoko?
Oooh, good call! Last album was 2009, when she was a mere 76, though she’s been remixing singles since then, I think. She’s 19 months older than Lenny and I can certainly see some people giving her the nod, especially if there’s another on the way. What a pair!
Personally I think Bob takes the prize for 65-and-over, but then I put Modern Times in his lifetime Top 10, which is high praise, and I suspect a lot of people wouldn’t go that far.
Well, she’s not the same kind of artist (and not very consistent), so she kinda sidesteps your premise, but she was the first old fogey that came to mind. Yeah, I wouldn’t go that far with Modern Times, either. But… when I’m pushing 70, it will likely be in dirt… so I can’t very well bitch about what he’s able to pull off at an advanced age. Didn’t realize Cohen was so old.
Thanks Willard, nice one!
BTW, this is the second MOJO Cohen cover collection, first one appeared in 2008.
Yeah, in December. You’d think I would have known that.
