New Guys With A Cool Vibe

New label imprint, Ardent Music (an offshoot of the long-dormant Ardent Records… think Stax & Big Star), is currently working their debut band, Jump Back Jake, a raw, horn-laced, Hammond-enhanced, smokey rock ‘n soul outfit recorded at Memphis’ famed Ardent Studios. Brooklyn Hustle / Memphis Muscle boasts meaty, seemingly live-in-the-studio retro-soul grooves (and a few acoustic asides) that would enhance the atmosphere of any respectable southern blues dive. I was hooked in the opening few seconds. You can stream Jump Back Jake’s entire debut above. Use the “Download” option to score the first track on the house (FLAC/320/ACC), plus a link to some free live tracks, too. The full album download is only $5. This is how to market a new band during a depression.

Yas,yas, one of the worst-kept secrets in Memphis, these guys are one of the reasons the city on the bluff is undergoing another musical renaissance. Be sure to check out another great group, the Bo-Keys, for a taste of that Memphis thang.

This band is really good. I saw them at SXSW at a impromptu show at Shangrila and they had the whole place dancing.
