MOJO PRESENTS Yellow Submarine Revisited (July 2012)

Yellow Submarine Resurfaces (July 2012)

The latest free CD issue from the July, 2012 edition of MOJO Magazine is a tribute to the re-release of the Yellow Submarine DVD and song soundtrack. There are some interesting covers here, especially some of George Harrison’s lost wonders, “It’s All Too Much,” “Only A Northern Song” and “Love You To.” I like Jim White’s “All Together Now,” but only because I already liked his bizarre style. The Cornshed Sisters, who recorded a vocally robust Beach Boys bonus cover for last month’s MOJO, tackle “Nowhere Man” here. Check out the twisted cover of George‘s psych rock epic, “It’s All Too Much,” below.

HOWE GELB Eleanor Rigby
JIM WHITE All Together Now
NATALIE DUNCAN Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
PETE SHELLEY Think For Yourself
MICHELE STODART Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
BENJAMIN FRANCIS LEFTWICH With A Little Help From My Friends
WOODEN WAND Baby, You’re A Rich Man
GRAVENHURST Only A Northern Song
THEA GILMORE All You Need Is Love

Looking forward to checking this out tonight. A few of these tunes are Beatles ones there aren’t 80 kajillion covers of out there. I’m sure my daughter Lauren will go for a different version of “All Together Now” too, or, as she calls it “the toothbrushing song”, as I sing it to get her to hold still while I brush her teeth before bed. She asks for Yellow Sub in her rotation of TV stuff these days, it’s a nice break from Toy Story and Cars over and over. She’s up to about 50 to 75 percent accuracy ar Beatle identificaion…

She may not like it. I’m not even sure I do, but I like White and his very weird style, so… I may be alone. I fear it may sound like one of those bad Beatles de-contructions to most people. But, you’re right… it’s cool to have covers of tunes that haven’t been done to death already. I was always a big fan of Yellow Submarine, mostly because of the timing and the drugs (at the time), but I also dug George’s enhanced profile on it, despite its lowly reputation in fan circles.

give this a spin. And glad to see you back.

Thanks Willard. That cover of “It’s All Too Much” is flippin’ wonderful! And I HATE HATE HATE Beatles covers (unless it’s by Mrs. Miller). Thanks for hanging in there.

    Mucho Thanks and Respect,

Having exhausted the Beatles catalog, d’ya think they’ll go next to, say, the JL Plastic Ono Band LP?

Before they do, I think I’d better email them and let them know I can run out to Daniel Johnston’s house and get him to do a few “demos” from POB at any time — if only cuz I hate it when they come out with one of these things and I don’t know who any of the bands are (and half of ’em suck…)
