    Meh. There’s nothing WRONG with the new single, but there’s nothing especially interesting about it either. Mick’s in surprisingly strong voice but other than that … y’know, that’s nice.

    I have a bootleg copy of the original Charlie is My Darling and it’s quite an entertaining little time capsule, worth picking up, but not for 70 clams.

    Due to a bootleg of studio outtakes called “Sticky Beggars Bleed in Exile” i snagged at the beginning of the summer, I’ve picked up from my Friendly Neighborhood Used CD Shoppe the Stones’ studio output from Aftermath on. Other than the two new songs, I’m not seeing much pull from this new version of greatest hits.

    Personally, I think the new single is Stones-by-numbers. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before from them. It sounds stale, like they’re just going through the motions.

      Actually, at the top of the DF screen, there is a tab to render it in English, which should then stay that way for all other DL files. It was/is an internal thing on DF’s end that pushed alot of DF screens (including mine) into Cyrillic. Freaked me out at first. Didn’t know if I was grabbing something real or a virus. Happily, I can say that I have had no issues since then

    I saw the Charlie Is My Darling in a movie theatre back in the day — if memory serves, it was a short film before the main feature (which might have been A Hard”s Night or Having A Wild Weekend) — worth a look to any trueblood Stones fan. As far as the box set melange goes, the Rolling Stones are beginning to surpass The Who in gouging their fans. I think the most credible Rolling Stones product in the past decade has been that great show they did at the Checkerboard Lounge with Muddy Waters which was recently released.

    I personally don’t begrudge what the Stones are doing. The bottom has fallen out of the music industry and artists can’t sell a million albums like they used to. The Stones offer inexpensive downloads from their web site (knowing full well they’re going to be duplicated everywhere), but create elaborate box sets that can’t be duped online. Anyone who doesn’t want another hits package can just skip it. I see fans that just HAVE to have every scrap, or every upgrade, as having the “illness”… and the artist is just filling the void the fan creates by giving them what they want… at a price, of course. That practice will quickly go away as soon as consumers stop buying it all. But, if they don’t… why shouldn’t it all be offered? That’s a one-sided simplification, but I still tend to believe it. And that’s because of what I did. About 20 years ago I decided that I wasn’t going to pay for paper goods anymore (picture sleeves, imports, etc etc). I would just stick to the music I wanted and wouldn’t pay for dupes. With downloading, I haven’t dropped a dime on music in years. If bands like the Stones – who are due to retire from live performing at some point VERY soon – choose to offer elaborate box sets to people who are willing to buy them… then all power to them. The bands get a new revenue stream to maintain their lifestyle and the hardcore get what they want… which they DO want, or they wouldn’t be buying it. It’s easy for fans to take a stand. I did with Zappa’s goons (I refused to even download those re-issues for free)… others can do the same… IF they want to. I understand that there are those who will still view what the Stones and others are doing as greedy, and it’s hard to dispute that. But, I think they’ve earned the right. It’s THEIR legacy, their product, their retirement fund (they are in their 70s, and I think this has all been wisely mapped out with that in mind). Most of us (I say “most,” or “many”) would do exactly the same given the circumstances. I make a similar argument about the price of sports tickets. If a team can sell out a stadium at $70 a pop, there’s no logic to selling tickets for $25, because they’ll sell out anyway and the broke fans won’t be able to get in either way. So… I don’t have an issue with any of it (since there’s always an alternative – sports on TV & borrowing, duping or downloading music). Especially since it doesn’t effect ME one iota. Sports tickets OR pricey box sets.

      I see what you’re saying Willard, and I used to wonder why there were always the Greatest Hits / Best Of albums including ‘two previously unreleased tracks’ being produced. Then I read that people who buy ‘Greatest Hits’ albums don’t tend to buy any other of the artist’s albums, and then the penny dropped. The poor bloody fans would shell out for an album to get basically a single. A three CD set with ‘two previously unreleased tracks’ is really taking the piss Wouldn’t it be far better if instead of the deluxe version being 80 tracks with ‘two previously unreleased tracks’ there might have been a version with 3 CDs of the hits and then another CD of alternate versions, obscurities and great live versions. Bruce Springsteen and Billy Bragg have done it, pity about the Stones

        If it was like the old days, where you HAD to buy the whole package to get those tracks, it would, indeed, still suck. But, these days, there are plenty of options to get what we want and we’re not forced in any way to buy the full monty any longer. Good for us, bad for the artist. If they’re big enough, like the Stones, they can make their money back in other places. Lesser artists have it tougher. That’s why I don’t begrudge the Stones. They’ve got plenty of loot and know how to make more. If fans feel they HAVE to have a 3CD or 4CD set to physically own those two songs… that’s kinda THEIR issue.

      The Stones and Mop-tops were always in it for the big bucks, and pretty much unashamed of that, and mostly insisted on get rich on their own terms. Gotta keep a senzayuma & perspective, nothing’s perfect. I don’t mind ripping off the rich for fripperies (or expensive box seats to baseball games). I do think that if baseball wants to maintain a deep and broad connection with the culture, it needs to offer cheap bleachers. Likewise rock ‘n’ roll, which unlike baseball has stumbled across a way of doing this.

      I go out of my way to pay for some music I could get for free, especially if it’s either by up-and-comers or fairly priced and going to the artist — the Radiohead voluntary model, the Stones cheapo downloads. I actually did buy 40 Licks (for the remastered sound & the then convenience). The live 65 stuff will sorely tempt me. Grrr, ah, not likely. So many thanks for this.

        You’re right about sports’ need to link to the culture… but, the culture link is already intact enough to sell out stadiums (yeah, I know…. not all of them), so the link IS there, it just caters to a richer clientele. What you’re talking about is a link to the poor among us. But, I’ll insist that those seats – in this day and age – would only be bought up and resold by those with connections and the poor will only get screwed in an all new way (like we/they always are). Yeah, it’s sad that it’s become a rich man’s world, but pretty much everything is like that. Everything BIG, anyway. I really shouldn’t be debating sports, though, since I know little about it and haven’t been to a BIG ball game since way into the last century. I HAVE gone to plenty of spring training games for $10, however, to get my fix for a day at the park and too many weenies. But, what I personally do to combat the high cost of ANYthing is lower my “needs.” I don’t “need” the newest remastered sound. I don’t “need” to see A-Rod in the flesh. I don’t “need” the latest phone, then another one 6 months later (truth be told… I’ve never owned even owned a cell phone, much less a pocket computer). Etc, etc, etc. Those that do “need” those things sometimes feel shafted by the New Corporate Order. Still, many of those people have bought into the consumer mindset like crackheads, and I no longer feel much empathy for all that (since I broke my own addiction). I GET it… but I just refuse to play the game any longer. Far too many people don’t even REALIZE the bait and switch, which I view as THEIR problem.

        But… I actually kinda disagree about the Mop-Tops. They were never that greedy. Capitol Records was. ABKCO was. Their merchandising arm was (Epstein practically gave it all away… granted, though cluelessness, not generosity). Not to mention their early philosophy of not putting singles on albums because they felt the consumer already had that music. Even now Paul & Ringo aren’t rushing every little thing out to just make money. In fact, I would hold the fabs (themselves) up as models for doing right by the masses, though, I’m sure there are plenty of examples to the contrary.

          The no-singles-on-albums thing was SOP in the UK (see also Honky Tonk Women, for example, and most of the 60s Stones). The Mpeatles were not generally exploitative, I agree, but they were very aware of top dollar, or maybe even more, top billing. They were stars, big-time, and smart enough to hide the groupies and downplay the greed. But you know the quote about “let’s write a swimming poll,” right? But yeah, not crass. Lovable. And psychedelic. And very, very cool.

    Disc 3 fascinates. Starts off pretty good, but by the time you get to “Waiting For A Friend” your mind will begin to wander as you wonder about what to play next. Anyone who makes it all the way to K.D. Lang’s song is a bigger fan than me.
