Enter The Wormhole #49 (Orchestrated Covers & More Covers)

<—Click To Enter… His first solo album in 22 years is a covers album. The other solo album he released this month is a somewhat mistitled, note-for-note covers album of his own past hits. How odd. Both are well worth your time. Check the archives for lots more from this guy, HERE.

Odd doesn’t begin to describe this head scratcher. Why? The drum sound is dated already.

I was curious so thanks for the opportunity to try before buying, W.

    Cheers, pal.

Couldn’t care less about his covers album of his old group, but I like his other covers album quite a bit…he has, always has had, a relaxed, informal way of re-presenting songs like this, and I for one like it, “dated” drum sounds be damned.

    Let’s sum up, shall we?

The remake album is, to my mind, a way to make the music available for licensing without involving the record company (like Squeeze and Def Leppard have done) and the other members (Bev, specifically). I really don’t buy the rap that it was done to update the sound or some such nonsense.

On the other hand, the standards album is almost comical and decidedly uncommercial. Why bother even putting it out?

In conclusion: How about getting Roy on the phone, Jeff, and getting with it?

Yeah… that thought crossed my mind, too. It just seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to. Squeeze and Def were bands, at least… Jeff did all this by himself. My hidden hope is that he’s re-aquainting himself with the best of his past to make another run at a real pop/rip-off album. I still think he can do it. As for Roy… he’ll need an awful long phone cord for that call.

Roy is still alive and kickin’. He’ll be gigging shortly, no doubt, around Christmas time, as usual.

In the meantime, have you read this?

Thanks. Love Roy. In the old days, more than any of the others.
