DREAM SYNDICATE The Complete Live At Raji’s (1988)

The Complete Live At Raji’s (1988)
Essential Live Swansong From 2004

The Complete Live at Raji’s (an expanded double-disc set featuring the full concert) is truly remarkable. Covering the band’s entire career, reaching all the way back to 1982’s groundbreaking The Days of Wine And Roses (over half of which is represented), the set list is a well-chosen blend of Steve Wynn’s twisted character studies and the band’s neo-psychedelic guitar rave-ups. The second disc in particular focuses on the latter side of Dream Syndicate’s sound, consisting entirely of half-a-dozen different jams in the seven- to nine-minute range, all of which feature only the barest minimum of aimless noodling in favor of some impressively noisy solos and some of Wynn’s most raw-throated singing, especially on a near-violent climax to “The Days Of Wine And Roses.” The whole thing is capped off with the definitive version of “John Coltrane Stereo Blues,” Dream Syndicate’s own “Sister Ray,” which had never quite been captured in its full glory on tape before. Dream Syndicate were already kaput when the first release of Live At Raji’s came out, but this expanded edition shows they went out at the peak of their powers.” – The All Music Guide. i saw the DS various times with original guitarist karl precoda and they were some of the wildest, over-the-top, psych-rock shows ever.
Not to say this album with cutler is weak – the 2nd disc jams are incredible. But as much as i love Raji's, i still hope they release a live cd with the orig lineup someday.

Longtime fan, first time caller here…..

For what it's worth, I usedta see these guys all the time, from the earliest incarnation with Karl and Kendra, to the later, latter days with Paul… Paul was an old compatriate from The Consumers, pioneering punk band, and genuinely a mad perverse genius of noise and dada and nihilism… but in fact, Karl was absolutely astonishing, and one of the most engaging, odd, eccentric stage presences ever….

Thank you for so many many things…. it's actually hilarious how our "taste" coincides…..and yes, I think the VU works better as a concept than as something to listen to …..

Super, super stuff. I love Steve Wynn and the DS. That solo on Merritville is just awesome. Great blog too.

As for the "band as concept" premise, there are so many. The Velvets for sure, The Doors, all that German krautrock stuff mostly except for Can. Oh and Girls Aloud.

After discovering these gems, I found Dream Syndicate have 194 shows available at archive.org, some soundboards some auds. Steve Wynn has a separate archive there as well. Worth digging around. All free, all legit.
