MOJO Presents… Heavy Soul (2010)

Mojo Presents:
Heavy Soul
(May, 2010)
One Of Mojo‘s Better Comps

Got this in the mail last week from our pals at Mojo and just can’t stop playing it. It’s hands down one of the UK mag’s better free compilations, even if this “15 track guitar funk freak out” had nothing to do with the issue it came with. Mojo Presents Heavy Soul is the dirty stuff – grimy funk beds, JB soul beats, hippy guitar work and overwhelmed VU meters. I knew a few of these artists going in, but most of the rest was news to me. If you’re into discovery, some of these long forgotten band names should whet your appetite; Bobby Franklin’s Insanity, Soul President, Moses Dillard & The Tex Town Display… I mean, come on! Who into 70s funk & soul wouldn’t be curious. Click the art below for a little more info on the contents. (@320)

BETTY DAVIS If I’m In Luck I Might Get Picked Up (4:56)
FUNKADELIC Super Stupid (3:44)
JC BROOKS & UPTOWN SOUND Baltimore Is The New Brooklyn (4:02)
MARION BLACK Come On And Gettit (2:14)
SOUL PRESIDENT Got To Have It (2:28)
CURTIS MAYFIELD Freddie’s Dead (5:18)
SIDNEY PINCHBACK Soul Strokes (2:38)
BLACK MERDA Take A Little Time (3:55)
CHUCK CARBO & THE SOUL FINDERS Can I Be Your Main Squeeze? (2:26)
BOBBY FRANKLIN’S INSANITY Bring It On Down To Me (Part 1) (2:28)
EUGENE BLACKNELL Gettin’ Down (2:35)
AARON NEVILLE Hercules (4:10)
DARONDO How I Got Over (3:39)

Thanks. I love that old soul. Mojo comps are usually pretty good. I'm looking forward to listening.

If you really love that old funky soul, Funky16Corners is the place to go.

I know and love Funkadelic and Mayfield. If the rest of this comp is half as good as those two songs, I'm in for a wild ride.

Bought `Mojo` for years until it got too expensive here in the U.K….So I missed this compilation…can`t thank you enough Willard for letting me hear the Betty Davis track..It`s a Killer!
And as the guy above said, anything with Funkadelic and Curtis Mayfield can`t be bad.

Thanks for posting our latest MOJO comp.
we think it is one of the best ever as well !

As you may or may not be aware our mean "parents" the Bauer Family are now trying to kill off our beautiful relationship.
they want all the freelancers to "sign their rights away" on a permanent basis.
at the moment we're losing the fight and as their are roughly 200 people affected, this could be the end of MOJO as we knew it.
what will appear out of the ashes,….. is anybody's guess.

more worrying is that this could set a world wide precedent to all publishers around the world that they can get away with murder.

    link below about our struggle.

    keep up the great blog!

Thanks for the advance info you sent on this. We're big Mojo fans here but, more importantly, have the same feelings as you regarding the rights of writers and photographers – and we're disappointed that the parent company would try to alter longstanding agreements with the people who make Mojo, and other some other UK mags, so good. Please feel free to provide updated links as the story progresses.
