DAN HICKS & HIS HOT LICKS Original Recordings (1969/1991) + Nine More LPs In Comments (RIP 2016)

Original Recordings (1969/1991)
Forgotten Pre-Rock Americana

After getting a number of comments about the
beloved Dan Hicks on our Blue Thumb Records post (All Day Thumbsucker Revisited: The History Of Blue Thumb Records, HERE), our pal Coffee Messiah was kind enough to send along this long-lost favorite for us all to enjoy. Original Recordings is the out-of-print, 1991 set of Hicks & Licks’ early recordings from 1969. The motley crew’s shufflin’, post-war, acoustic folk & jazz/blues stew was an anomaly in San Franpsychedelica in the late 60s, but somehow Hicks’ witty repartee and tongue-in-cheek sophistication easily won over the young heads’ hearts and minds. That gypsy bluegrass violin work made it easy, and it’s used to amazing effect on one of Hicks’ high water marks, the slow burning, “I Scare Myself.” Still a valued taste of forgotten, pre-rock Americana… and there are nine more Hicks releases to be found in comments, courtesy of Slidewell. Find Original Recordings at Amazon (HERE). Dan passed away today, February 6, 2016.

Funny how this classic would be OOP, Dan is still touring with the latest incarnation of the band. A true classic from my youth…

Thank you so much! One of my favorite artists on one of my favorite blogs. Great choice. I did not have this one & always wanted to check it out. I received Dan's latest from last year as a gift "Tangled Tales". Pick that one up as well as the extended version of "It Happened One Bite". Can't go wrong with Dan's lps though. Thanks again!

Thomas Dolby did a cover of "I Scare Myself" that I always liked. Thanks for sharing the original.

Wow, what beautiful music. I always used to wonder how this guy fit into the rest of the SF scene at the time, but now I've figured it out–this is what people listened to AFTER the got finished blowing their brains out at the Fillmore.

I Scare Myself was also covered by Australian soul singer Renee Geyer on a compilation called "Where Joy Kills Sorrow". I'd never heard the original before. Thanks.

Always glad to see Dan Hicks’ formidable talent properly commemorated. However, the final track IS titled “Jukies Ball”…not that a narcotic reference would be altogether out of place in Hicks’ demimonde-in-song.

Thanks Slidewell, I had the last half of these on CD and the first half on vinyl, but never a copy of “It Happened One Bite” and the vinyl is hard to play in the car. Speaking of which, in 1972 we were living in Big Sur and drove to Carmel weekly to get provisions. “Where’s the Money?” was constantly playing in the tape deck as we swerved along the coast highway. Mrs Candyside was pregnant at the time and is still unable to hear that album without experiencing morning sickness. Sorry, Dan.

Willard! Thanks so much for this. Like many others leaving comments, I had this one on vinyl, lo those many years ago. Of course, that is long gone. But now, thanks to you, I can enjoy it once more. The track you picked to play is my favorite Dan Hicks tune. Must thank Anonymous for pointing out Thomas Dolby. I heard I Scare Myself somewhere last year, but it didn’t sound like the version I was used to. I’m thinking it was Thomas now.

And particular thanks to Slidewell for the massive posts! I’d lost track of Dan after “Last Train…”. Now I have a bunch to listen to!!

Something must be happening in the zodiac, Willard, and I fear the worst. With Dan’s passing, my roll call of remaining living musical touchstones is sadly getting whittled down to a very short list indeed. Dan was one of a kind, an anomaly, a man out of time whose music has brought me countless hours of good cheer. I’ll miss him.

Saw Dan & The Hot Licks in Woodstock in 2006. Incredible music, incredible artist (check out his graphics work). In Feb 1971,

Rolling Stone had a picture of Dan (during his Charlatan days) flipping the bird–I’ve had that picture over my desk since that day. I posted the picture on Twitter (search #DanHicks). Go to music when you’re feelin’ down.

Never a week passes by by without some Hicks on my stereo.
