HANK WILLIAMS The Complete Hank Williams (1998)

The Complete Hank Williams (1998)
Why I Miss The Columbia Record Club

When my musical tastes began to expand uncontrollably in the 70s/80s, I found myself drawn to various ethnic and traditional musics from around the world. Without even really understanding any of it, I seemed to naturally take to juju, singing monks, Afro-Cuban, koto and Indian raga, to name a few. There was something about the non-commerciality of it all I found appealing, though… it could have just been a knee-jerk reaction to the crap the radio was serving up in those days. But, it took the personal revelation that America had its own ethnic music, a fact I’d long ignored, to appreciate country music. Not that horseshit they call “country” today, mind you, but the real roots stuff that was initially created without an inkling of profit motive. I still don’t know much about it, but have grown to love the raw reality of it, not to mention the endless amount of modern music that was influenced by it. Enter Hank Williams. Besides The Carter Family, Hank embodies that first generation of artists who helped to bring country music out of the mountains and into the mainstream, via records and old time radio – and The Complete Hank Williams covers it all. Granted, it’s not actually “complete,” and at 10 discs it might even be overkill – with plenty of scratchy, inferior recordings in the quest for completion. But, if you want to investigate the roots of folk and country, here you go. (Dabblers might want to stick to the MGM material.) Listen below to “I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive,” which sounds, to these ears, like the basis for The Kinks’ Muswell Hillbilllies classic, “Complicated Life.” This set still runs between $100-$150 @ Amazon (HERE), but it’s a worthy package that expertly documents the colorful history of America’s own, rich and rewarding indigenous music.

Lord, what sweet heaven of musical DELIGHT have I stumbled upon here? Captain, you are – I am – speechless. Thank you so so very much for sharing your treasure trove of tunes with us. Oh damn I just saw the Flo & Eddie sessions. Not to take your time, just a few bows and nods in your direction as I wander off to roam the stacks, as it were…you have phenomenal taste.
(Meaning, I guess, it’s pretty similar to mine but with avenues worth exploring.)

    Peace out sir,

    G the K
