THE QUICK Mondo Deco (1976)

Mondo Deco (1976)
An L.A. Glam Pop Concoction

They’re from L.A., but this sugary glam concoction bristles like it’s straight out of the U.K., fusing multiple influences (Bay City Rollers, Bowie, Sweet, Sparks) into a bright, snappy package of unwavering pop. L.A. denizen Kim Fowley was behind getting these guys signed, and you have to figure he thought that this was the act that would make him rich. This brand of stylized radio pop, however, was already on the wane (Cheap Trick didn’t get the memo) and this exuberant and glammy variation of it fell on deaf ears… just prior to the advent of the new wave it was born for. If you’re the musically diabetic type, you might flinch at the pitched high vocals, which, at times, fall just short of The Chipmunks. I was a late comer to The Quick, and always harbored a suspicion of their seriousness, which may have just been my ultra-sensitive Kim Fowley antennae acting up. High fructose connoisseurs, however, have treasured this stuff for the decades its been out of print. “Anybody,” below, is one of the rawer, more “realistic” tracks from the LP. Amazon has it. Your dentist is calling. Thanks to Grateful for the re-up.
