THE DONNAS Spend The Night (2002)

Spend The Night (2002)
Drunk & Horny Girls Gone Wild

Perhaps I should be ashamed for liking this so much. I was in a record shop in 2002 when I first heard this energetic, unapologetic, pop-rock prick tease – styled in the grand tradition of the original Alice Cooper band – and I bought it on the spot. I’d heard The Donnas before, but never cared for their muddy, amateurish Ramones-in-drag routine. Same goes for their more recent, post 2002 work, suddenly marked by curiously pedestrian dino-rhythms. Spend The Night, on the other hand, nailed it just right. Sure, the girls’ pose – overage jailbaiters bent on stayin‘ high & gettin‘ screwed – has its prurient appeal. But what sold me was the catchy, pent up energy and every tune’s Killer-esque, no-frills approach. If you like the three tracks below, the rest is exactly the same – and it doesn’t get tired. So, am I just some old geez vicariously lusting after the “sticky sweet?” Does it matter if it rocks? At a fast paced 40 minutes, and not a ballad in the mix, it doesn’t take long to find out for yourself. The original 2002 CD is as cheap as a penny at Amazon. NEWLY ADDED: The rare, vinyl bonus track, “Big Rig.”

It’s On The Rocks
Take It Off

Who Invited You
All Messed Up
Dirty Denim
You Wanna Get Me High
I Don’t Care (So There)

Please Don’t Tease
Take Me To The Backseat

5 O’Clock In The Morning
Big Rig (Vinyl Bonus Track)

Thanks. No worries about being an 'old geezer' and vicariously lusting. At 53, I've been a 'dirty old man in training' for nigh going on 10 years now. Nothing wrong with that as long as it stays in the mind.
Thanks for you site and great posts.

Thanks for the comments. But…Anon, you might want to check those lyrics before passing this on to your daughter, no matter what age she is.

Their last couple albums didn't match this one. Here's hoping they have a few more. -Nick

Yeah, Nick. I thought the same thing. They didn't have the same energy. The guitars just seemed sluggish in comparison to Spend The Night. Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Willard, If you like the Donnas, you should check out The Detroit Cobras. They tend towards garage rock covers of 50s rock. At least, that's my impression of them. Far more listenable and believable when they're coming on to you through the airwaves.

Ha Ha! I had the exact same record shop introduction experience to the Donna's, but I think it was one album earlier, the 'Turn 21' disc. Love the mix of stuff you can count on at this blog. Sorry to be all gushy about it, but I've been coming here for a few years without saying thanks to you, because I gave up posting comments after most other blogs wouldn't accept them without a Google ID, even though they CLAIMED they would. I owe, I owe, so off to post I go…

Love The Donnas. We all need a taste of the "sticky sweet" now and then. Thanks for posting this and adding Big Rig.
