Meet The Covers! A Tribute To The Beatles (1997)
Todd, Harry, Nils and Richie (With A Little Help…)

Simple, but effective compilation from Hip-O Select that gathers together a few of the more inventive realizations of The Beatles’ often impossible-to-better music. There’s no overall ‘concept’ to rally around (besides the obvious), as the track selection has the feel of a knowledgeable pal’s mixtape, with some essential, high quality choices like Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Got To Get You Into My Life” and Nilsson’s celebrated harmony-fest, “You Can’t Do That,” incorporating dozens of Beatles melodies. Like any good mixtape, there are a few gems and a few surprises and, surprisingly, no outright duds (though, the odds dictate that everyone will want to skip something). Todd, The Flamin’ Groovies and The Grass Roots lean faithful, while Richie Havens, Little Richard and Aretha get personally interpretive. In between is a listenable array of styles, from gospel to dance. And… aren’t you at least curious what Siouxsie is doing covering “Dear Prudence.” For an idea that’s about as played-out as it could possibly be, Meet The Covers! is still a fun diversion, worth at least a spin from anyone still desperately clinging (for dear life) to the target demographic age group.
