Gumby (1989)
Obscure Tribute To That Big Green Rubbery Guy

One of our commenters mentioned this ancient artifact from the 20th Century and we thought it might be fun to post it, if only for the Beatles re-write by Flo & Eddie (The Turtles/The Mothers) that captures the fab’s psych years in a rich parody of/homage to “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “I Am The Walrus” (“all we are saying, is give Gumby a chance”). There’s some other fun stuff here as well, including Dweezil & Moon Unit Zappa’s original tribute, Sly & Robbie, Jonathan Richman and even Francis Albert’s kid, Frank Sinatra, Jr., taking an extremely weak swing at the show’s theme song (the kid never really had the chops). All but three of the contributions are original compositions. Amazon.

Mine arrived by post today. At the time I purchased, the cheapest Deluxe Smile Box was from Amazon-Canada (the price has gone up since). Dunno why it was so low. My question: Is there anyone who is seriously invested (emotionally) in Smile who does NOT have zillions of versions of it already? I mean, Sea of Tunes put out a ton, Vigotone put out the classic version and then a remake, even the Beach Boys box set, from way back when, essentially strung together a “Smile album” in the middle of the box. Not to mention Linear Zap and numerous others.

Oh well, what am I saying? I bought the damn thing.

Amazingly I actually received this on cassette as a gift way back when. Definitely worth a listen.

    Great site.
