PINK FLOYD Meddled (1971 BBC Live)

Meddled (1971)
Excellent Meddle-era BBC Live Show

Outstanding BBC broadcast of Pink Floyd’s September 30, 1971 concert at The Paris Cinema in London. Recorded just prior to the release of Meddle, and featuring a 26 minute “Echoes.” The debut of “One Of These Days” appears to momentarily stun this crowd, hearing it for the first time. You can debate which musical version of Pink Floyd is your favorite, but, for these ears, it all came together on Meddle, and this concert is an excellent snapshot from that period. Great stereo sound, though, “Embryo” & “Blues” are from a different source.

Fat Old Sun (15:37)
One Of These Days (7:31)
Echoes (26:42)
Embryo (10:56)
Blues (5:40)

I already have this (lossless) and I can say that this is one of the absolute best Floyd boots out there. Even casual fans of the band should grab this one. The 26+ minute "Echoes" is easily the highlight of this set, with "Fat Old Sun" a close second.

    Jimbo sez CHECK IT OUT!

Thanks for posting this – a great show.

And I agree with you on flac – I can't hear enough of a difference to warrant dealing with them.

I do appreciate the feelings posted above with regards to flac. but I do feel that, when listening to Marcel Marceau, only the best will do.

We all have different ears, I guess. I could never tell the difference between a CD and an mp3 @ 128 when it comes to Marcel Marceau. Maybe it's me.

Honestly, unless I have headphones on,I don't really notice the difference my self. Being an old fart, I still feel that a good LP played on a decent system still has a better 'FEEL' to it. I find that the mix on new CDs sometimes makes for painful listening. Although the frequencies removed for MP3s are not audible, the music loses the ambience that gives it the 'LIVE' feel.
Still, enough of this deep audiophile claptrap, Thanks for playing along with the Marcel Marceau rubbish, I do think this is the top blog for great posts and the intelligent comments from your audience.
    Best wishes

Dear Marcel Mraceau, I feel that your comments are totally out of order. if you don't like your performances being shared on the internet, then release live albums. Get out of the box and stop walking against the wind.
Wake up. this is the 21st century.

Many thanks! I’ve been springing for a few of the Floyd 2011 remasters and have been especially fond of the “Obscured By Clouds,” and “Meddle” era recordings. Looking forward to hearing this one.

Yep, “Meddle” remains the fave, though I’m liking “Obscured By Clouds” a lot too, these days.

The new 6-disc (5-disc? – I forget) DSOTM has, after about 15 different versions of the album, a few choice newly released instrumental ’72 tracks at the end, namely “The Travel Sequence (Live)”, “The Morality Sequence (Live)” and “The Travel Sequence (Studio)”. Worth getting that last disc of the set, at least, for those three alone.

Thanks, Willard. My version of this is called ‘Meddler’ n it’s only 128. Weird. And it’s got a DJ stating the station of broadcast during the song(s) – WNEWFM ? Is it the same? I dunno. Unlike Arty, I’m always stunned when I listen to him. Cheers! Peace.

Yeah, mine’s a re-re-broadcast. UK DJ Brian Mathew [?] opens n closes the first 3 track [show] with the late great John Peel introducing each song including the sublime Echoes. I don’t like to hear the DJs when listening to stuff though. Now, where’s me scissors. Peace.

I am not a big fan of early Pink Floyd. I guess that leaves me in the minority by saying I think they got better after Syd left. I know that may offend some people, but its just the way I feel. I dont even know when Syd officially left or if he was involved with this recording, but this has always been one of my favorite bootlegs. I just know for my tastes Pink Floyd started with Meddled and ended with the Wall.
PS…Thanks for putting this up here. I love your blog

I didn’t pick on Syd, but those are pretty much my thoughts too. See our Meddle post. Though, personally, I was already done with them by The Wall. Animals was great, but The Wall, save for a few songs, turned me off them. The band’s early psych stuff was something I missed when it was happening – I’m guessing you probably missed it, too – and Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother had some cool stuff, but this period is the shit. I fully understand why the Brits that were there dug all the early stuff and still stand by it. Some of us missed the boat, however, and often find solace in this period of Pink.

I was pointed to Meddled by a guy in my hifi shop & would really like to hear Echoes (may No.1 favourite Floyd track) from it. One of These Days isn’t a favourite but I was gobsmacked by the sample above, you can hear that these guys are really buzzing at this concert.

Could anyone point me to where I could get a copy of ‘Meddled’ or even just a listen.
btw Is that John Peel presenting it?
