THE BEATLES Back To Basics-Studio Sessions: Rubber Soul (1965)

Back To Basics – Studio Sessions: Rubber Soul (2011)
Volume Six… And Some Bonus Instrumentals

More gathered Beatles sessions and rarities. Like the initial volumes in this series, Please Please Me Studio Sessions, With The Beatles Studio Sessions, A Hard Day’s Night Studio Sessions, Beatles For Sale Studio Sessions & Help Studio Sessions (in the archives), this new collection fleshes out the Rubber Soul sessions. Lots of different mixes, from many sources. The instrumental bonus versions come from Rock Band and are the cleanest vocal-free versions yet. We’ll post subsequent volumes as they surface.

I don’t know who put these Studio Sessions collections together but they seem pretty exhaustive! I’ve always wondered how anybody got access to all these things from the EMI vaults as you’d think they’d have some kind of security in place. Odd they wouldn’t protect their most valuable recordings. But I guess us fans are the lucky ones since it’s really interesting to hear a lot of these outtakes and oddities. Thanks for posting up this series. Did the series stop here or were there more collections for Revolver and Sgt. Pepper’s?

Willard! You do great work, man! You’re a credit to music lovers everywhere.
Now I realize that ‘Rain’ is not from the ‘Rubber Soul’ sessions, but rather, ‘Revolver’. I looked for a ‘Revolver’ sessions on your site, but couldn’t find one. Just wondering if you might possibly have access to a quality audio version of ‘Rain’, but ‘Instrumental’ only? Just the ‘Rain’ Backing Track?? Been looking for a good copy for a while, and it would really complete my personal Beatles Backing Track collection.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

      March 29, 2014 - 18:00 | Permalink

Quality? No. About all I have is this, which is low bit rate and intentionally mixed at a different speed (not as fast as they recorded it, but not as slow as they released it). As a result, it sounds strange. And there are still a few chorus vocals remaining. I haven’t heard all of the Rock Band mixes, but it seems like THAT would be the place to find what you’re after. Until then, this is all I’ve got… which won’t make your day.

        March 29, 2014 - 19:51 | Permalink

Hey! Thanks for that! It’s not terrible. I had recently found one from the YT video of the ‘Revlver Sessions’,
so I isolated it and converted it to mp3. It’s about the exact same quality as the one you gave me. It’s sure better than NOTHING!
The only .mogg files I’m aware of from the Giles Martin ‘Rockband’ sessions are these. ‘Rain’ is not included.
Are there more I don’t know about NOT included here? That’s where I got the vast majority of my backing tracks from, give or take.
        Thanks again!

I haven’t kept up with the Rock Band files, so I don’t really know what’s out there. It’s just the first thing that crossed my mind… until that Back To Basics Revolver finds its way online. There’s been a hard disc out there for a half-year, but I haven’t seen any files online yet. I’ll keep checking. Thanks.

As far as I know, just the ones on that MediaFire link I gave you, are the ones Giles assembled for the game. I could be wrong, though.
Thanks again and let me know if you find something better.

I’m grabbing these since I only have a few. Are these your uploads? Thanks.

      • Tom B.
        March 30, 2014 - 01:49 | Permalink

No, sir. Not my uploads. I found it. If you want to download your own copy of those ‘RockStar’ dot mogg ‘Beatle backing tracks’, and you have BitTorrent, you can easily download your own copy of the file here:

Then download freeware called Audacity which will allow you to open the files and listen to each separate track on each song, and then save it to your hard drive. It will split them up for you when you open the file. You can download it here:

In Audacity, go to File/Open and open file. Once it’s open, you can click on either ‘Solo’ or ‘Mute’ for each separate instrument and vocal part.
Once you have file set the way you want to save it, go to File/Export and save mp3 file.
        That’s it!
        It’s surprisingly simple.
You may not leave the house for a week once you get the hang of it. There are thousands of different configurations of dfferent instrument and vocal tracks to listen to.
        Good luck!

Just curious, because the page said there were 0 downloads on each track. Yeah, I’ve got Audacity, but I’m sure anyone else who stumble on this will appreciate the tutorial. Many thanks.

“because the page said there were 0 downloads on each track.”
I hadn’t noticed that until you just mentioned it. I don’t know why it says that. I downloaded many of those tracks, at least until I found my own copy, which I provided a download link to. As to why each track says “0 downloads”, I couldn’t tell you.
    You’re welcome! Hope it’s helpful.

I now have a 3-disc ‘BEATLES Backing Tracks’ collection assembled and it came out pretty damn good, complete with CD inserts. graphics and artwork, in chronological order. Some from the dot mogg ‘Rockstar’ files, and some from other sources. ‘Rockstar’ only has maybe 1/4 of the songs they recorded, maybe 1/3.
Is that ‘Rain – Instrumental’ you provided me the same one you posted in here with the audio player?
Thanks for the final piece of that puzzle!

Well, I wrote the guy about 10 days ago and asked him if he would be wlling to send it to me in an email, for which he replied that he couldn’t do it because if “he does it for me, he has to do it for everyone.”. Whatever.

Been having trouble accessing your site. Keep getting an ‘Error establishing a database connection’ error message. I guess this is a reocurring problem in WordPress. Here’s a solution:

Make sure you try different browsers with Soundcloud.

I’m not really on WordPress, per se. It’s my own site, but the host uses a WordPress set up. The site goes down on occasion because of the servers. It doesn’t happen that much, comes back on its own and isn’t a big deal. I’ve gotten use to it.
